Egypt and Somalia Hold Talks on Next Steps from Alamein Quadrilateral Summit to Enhance Security in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea

In recent diplomatic developments, Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering regional collaboration with Somalia and other countries in the Horn of Africa. This commitment comes on the heels of the recent quadrilateral consultative summit held in El Alamein, Egypt, which brought together leaders from Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan.

Follow-Up Discussions between Egypt and Somalia

On October 18, 2026, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in a phone conversation with Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali. Their discussions focused on the necessary measures to ensure the effective implementation of the outcomes from the El Alamein summit. Both officials acknowledged the significance of ongoing coordination to enhance security, stability, and development across the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea regions.

Abdelatty underscored Egypt’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized the importance of fostering strong Somali state institutions and their capabilities. This dedication highlights Egypt’s role as a key player in addressing regional challenges and promoting peace.

Support for Unity and Sovereignty

During the El Alamein summit, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi facilitated discussions among the leaders of Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan. The assembled leaders collectively reiterated their commitment to supporting the sovereignty of both Sudan and Somalia. They notably expressed their opposition to any parallel political entities in Sudan, as well as the controversial concept of “Somaliland.”

The summit’s outcomes were geared towards recognizing the exclusive authority of Red Sea littoral states in managing their maritime governance. The leaders agreed that collaborative efforts among these nations would serve to enhance economic integration and connectivity, essential factors for regional growth and stability.

Regional Collaboration and Development

The discussions between Egypt and Somalia represent a broader vision of regional cooperation in tackling the pressing issues facing the Horn of Africa. Both countries are strategically positioned to lead initiatives aimed at fostering economic stability and political unity in the region. The two foreign ministers expressed optimism about mutual cooperation and its potential to drive significant development in their respective nations.

Egypt’s proactive stance and ongoing diplomatic efforts are pivotal in strengthening alliances among Horn of Africa nations. As these countries face multifaceted challenges—including security threats, humanitarian crises, and economic instability—collective action and collaboration can provide vital solutions.

By supporting Somalia and reinforcing its sovereignty, Egypt aims to establish a more stable and interconnected Horn of Africa—one that paves the way for sustainable growth and peace in the years to come.
