Five crew members were rescued from the merchant vessel HS Dignity, which sank on Tuesday in the Black Sea near the Bulgarian coastline. This information was shared by Captain Al-Sayed al-Shazly al-Naggar, who heads the Egyptian Maritime System and represents the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) in Egypt.

The vessel was on its way from Algeria to Braila, Romania, with a crew of 16, consisting primarily of 14 Syrian sailors and two Egyptians. Unfortunately, the search continues for 11 sailors who remain unaccounted for. While Captain Ashraf Mamdouh survived the sinking, Captain Mustafa al-Ghazy is still missing.

### Incident Details

Reports indicate that the HS Dignity sustained damage from drones and bombs, resulting in its sinking. This incident appears to be distinct from a simultaneous attack targeting another vessel, the Chelsea 3. Both ships were attacked in the same vicinity, with one sinking and the other managing to stay afloat. The precise motives behind these assaults remain unclear, but they underscore escalating tensions in the region.

### Responses to the Attacks

In the wake of this maritime incident, the Bulgarian Prime Minister publicly condemned the attacks, labeling them as “absolutely unacceptable.” He also announced intentions to reach out to NATO and the European Union for assistance. This response reflects growing concerns about maritime security in the Black Sea.

Moreover, the President of the European Commission highlighted that the Black Sea is becoming a “new front” in ongoing conflicts. His remarks underline the urgency of addressing the threats posed to commercial vessels navigating these waters, a critical transit hub for international trade.

### Ongoing Search and Rescue Operations

As the search and rescue missions continue, the focus remains on locating the missing crew members. While one captain has been found, the fate of others aboard the HS Dignity is still uncertain. The efforts include extensive coordination between local authorities and international entities, amplifying the urgency of the situation.

In summary, the sinking of the HS Dignity has heightened awareness regarding maritime security in the Black Sea. With multiple parties affected, the implications of these attacks extend beyond the immediate impact on maritime operations. As the situation develops, responses from international organizations and governments will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of navigation and safety in this critical region.
