Egyptian sailors aboard hijacked vessel near Somalia are reportedly safe, says Foreign Ministry.

On May 2, 2026, an alarming incident unfolded off the coast of Somalia as a commercial cargo ship with an Egyptian crew was hijacked by pirates. This situation has raised concerns among families and the Egyptian community, prompting a swift diplomatic response to ensure the crew’s safety.

Details of the Hijacking Incident

Ambassador Haddad El-Gohary, who serves as the Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs and Egyptians Abroad, provided insights into the hijacking during a phone interview on Al-Hayat TV. He stated that pirates often assault vessels indiscriminately, without prior knowledge of the crew’s nationality, which negated reports suggesting that the pirates specifically targeted the Egyptian sailors. The ship involved in the hijacking is an oil tanker owned by a UAE company, which was seized near the Yemeni coast close to Shabwa Governorate. Following the hijacking, the vessel has reportedly been taken to the Puntland region of Somalia, approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu. The crew comprises eight Egyptians and four Indians.

Government Response and Diplomatic Efforts

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been actively engaged in addressing the crisis since its onset. Ambassador El-Gohary stressed that Minister Badr Abdelatty provided immediate directives to the Egyptian embassy located in Mogadishu. These directions included maintaining a consistent dialogue with Somali authorities to prioritize the crew’s safety and work towards their prompt release. Such proactive measures are crucial in navigating the complexities of international piracy.

To alleviate the concerns of the sailors’ families, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully set up direct communication between the stranded sailors and their loved ones in Egypt. This initiative aims to offer reassurance to families who are naturally anxious about the well-being of their relatives.

Assurances Regarding Crew Well-being

Ambassador El-Gohary reassured everyone that the Egyptian sailors are in good health and are being treated respectfully by their captors. He emphasized that their safety and well-being are the Egyptian government’s foremost priorities during this crisis. The assurance comes amid fears that could arise from such precarious situations, where the welfare of those involved is often uncertain.

In closing, the ambassador expressed confidence in the ongoing diplomatic efforts. He stated that the Egyptian state is monitoring the situation at the highest levels, involving both diplomatic channels and security measures. His optimism suggests that there may soon be a resolution, returning the Egyptian sailors safely to their families. The incident not only highlights the dangers of piracy off the Somali coast but also underscores the importance of robust governmental responses in times of crisis.
