Egyptian real estate developer Al Ismaelia for Real Estate Investment has made history by becoming the first company in the MENA region to be awarded the World Economic Forum’s Beyond Tourism Impact Stars distinction. This honor, in the Infrastructure and Real Estate category, recognizes their outstanding initiative, “Reviving Downtown Cairo.”
A Groundbreaking Initiative: Reviving Downtown Cairo
The “Reviving Downtown Cairo” project focuses on the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. It was selected as one of six global projects in the inaugural cohort of the Beyond Tourism Impact Stars program. Accepting the accolade on behalf of Al Ismaelia at the Forum’s Beyond Tourism Day in Geneva, Switzerland, Karim Shafei highlighted the significance of this recognition for the preservation and enhancement of urban heritage.
The World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Tourism and management consulting firm Kearney, launched the Beyond Tourism Impact Stars program. This initiative aims to spotlight commercially sustainable private-sector efforts that address tourist challenges and yield tangible benefits for businesses, communities, and destinations.
Emphasizing Cultural Heritage and Urban Revitalization
Shafei remarked, “The architecture of Downtown Cairo is an incredible asset, and its sustainability lies in continuous public engagement.” Each new business and visitor contributes to the longevity of these historic structures. The initiative strives to entice visitors to extend their stay in Cairo, encouraging them to immerse themselves in the local culture, enjoy dining experiences, and discover the creative talents of Egyptian designers. He believes this will create noteworthy opportunities for the businesses and individuals that contribute to the vibrant neighborhood.
Al Ismaelia, established in 2008, has revitalized 25 properties in Downtown Cairo, transforming them for modern uses without sacrificing their architectural integrity. Their portfolio features diverse spaces, such as Cinema Radio, which blends cultural events with retail and dining; the La Viennoise Building, featuring a boutique hotel and rooftop venue; the Nabarawy Fashion Hub, dedicated to independent Egyptian fashion; and Tamara Haus, which combines hospitality and design with cultural engagement.
Supporting Economic Growth Through Cultural Programming
The focus on cultural programming and carefully curated businesses is central to the operations of these properties. By fostering activities that generate commercial interactions, Al Ismaelia ensures that the necessary upkeep of historic buildings is financially viable. The company’s goal is to entice tourists to dedicate an additional day in their itineraries to explore the architectural beauty and local offerings of the area.
This recognition aligns harmoniously with Egypt’s national plans to diversify its tourism offerings, enhance destination development, and attract private investments. The initiative exemplifies how heritage-centered urban regeneration can transform historical treasures into economic drivers, promoting entrepreneurship and job creation while reinforcing the local identity and quality of life.
A Collaborative Approach for Sustainable Development
Working closely with public institutions, local enterprises, and cultural organizations, Al Ismaelia plays a vital role in the broader revitalization of Downtown Cairo. As a member of the inaugural cohort, the company is poised to participate in a year-long program in partnership with the World Economic Forum, focusing on knowledge exchange and exploring methods for a widespread application of successful practices in other historic urban areas within the region.
This innovative approach not only enhances the cultural landscape but also serves as a practical model for other cities in Egypt, illustrating how destination development can be intricately woven with heritage conservation. By viewing heritage as a vital, active asset rather than a relic, Al Ismaelia sets a new precedent for urban development practices in the region.
