Egypt’s Foreign Minister Engages in Multiple Discussions During the 81st Annual Meeting of the World Bank Group and IMF in Bangkok

On October 16, 2026, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in pivotal meetings aimed at enhancing Egypt’s international relations. These discussions occurred during the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Bangkok, Thailand. The focus was on fostering bilateral relationships, attracting foreign investment, and reinforcing collaborations, especially with Arab and Asian nations.

Strengthening Egypt-Thailand Relations

In his meeting with Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Abdelatty emphasized the potential for economic collaboration between Egypt and Thailand. The discussions centered on both nations’ objective to double their existing trade, which currently stands at $1.2 billion. A significant aspect of their dialogue involved exploring investment opportunities within Egypt, particularly in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Notably, this visit marked a milestone as it was the first by an Egyptian foreign minister to Thailand in three decades.

Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s strategic importance as a logistical hub for Thai industries and their products. The Minister portrayed Egypt as not just a gateway to Africa but also positioned Thailand to tap into the lucrative Asia-Pacific market. Furthermore, the talks encompassed regional dynamics, with Abdelatty sharing Egypt’s diplomatic efforts aimed at easing ongoing tensions, a point that received commendation from the Thai delegation.

Engagements with Syrian and Jordanian Officials

In addition to his discussions with Thai officials, Abdelatty met with Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh to further enhance economic ties between Egypt and Syria. The meeting followed a successful Egyptian economic delegation’s recent visit to Syria, laying the groundwork for Abdelatty’s impending visit to Damascus. In this context, the two ministers focused on areas for collaboration that could benefit both nations economically.

Moreover, Abdelatty’s talks with Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan revolved around expanding cooperation across various sectors, such as investment and development. They discussed leveraging international financial institutions for financing development projects and emphasized the importance of bolstering coordination between the IMF and World Bank. These discussions aimed to address regional economic challenges proactively and promote sustainable development initiatives.

Building Ties with Qatar and Sudan

Abdelatty also held discussions with Qatari Finance Minister Ali bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, focusing on advancing economic and investment relations, especially in sectors like infrastructure, logistics, and energy. The meeting prioritized mobilizing private investment to boost Egypt’s development projects, particularly in green investments, facilitated through the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Lastly, he met with Jibril Ibrahim, Sudan’s Finance Minister, to reaffirm the historical and fraternal ties between Egypt and Sudan. The ministers discussed measures to strengthen their relationship and expand cooperation in varied sectors aimed at fulfilling mutual aspirations. Ambassador Nader Zaki represented Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressing that the two nations firmly oppose any attempts to undermine their relationship, which is built on mutual respect and good-neighborly principles.

In summary, these meetings not only emphasize Egypt’s proactive approach to enhancing bilateral ties with various nations but also underline its strategic position in fostering regional stability and economic growth. Through these engagements, Egypt aims to solidify its role as a key player in international relations and economic partnerships.
