Enhancing Air Quality: Egypt Cuts Carbon Emissions by 30% and Transitions 100 Buses to Electric Power

Cairo’s Ministry of Local Development and the Environment is taking significant strides to enhance air quality and reduce emissions from vehicles. As stated by Dr. Manal Awad, the minister overseeing these initiatives, the government has laid out an actionable plan to transition towards more environmentally friendly transportation options.

Strategies to Reduce Vehicle Emissions

Dr. Awad outlined key strategies aimed at achieving their environmental goals. The ministry is focusing on increasing the use of cleaner transport options, updating the public transportation fleet, and encouraging the use of buses that run on natural gas and electricity. “The modern transport network established over the past twelve years has helped decrease carbon emissions by 30 percent,” the minister noted. This achievement is attributed to concerted efforts to create a more sustainable urban transport system, which has also had a favorable impact on traffic congestion, reduced travel times, and lowered fuel consumption—factors that collectively promote better public health.

Extensive Air Quality Monitoring Network

To effectively track air quality levels across the country, the ministry has set up 123 air quality monitoring stations. This initiative works in tandem with the ongoing efforts to upgrade public transport systems and lower vehicle emissions. The government is also in the process of converting existing public transport buses to greener alternatives. Currently, 754 buses operated by the Greater Cairo and Alexandria Public Transport Authorities have been switched from diesel to natural gas, with a larger goal of converting 2,262 buses overall.

Innovative Electric Bus Initiatives

In addition to natural gas conversions, a total of 100 buses have been transitioned to electric power. Additionally, 20 electric buses have been allocated for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, showcasing the ministry’s commitment to maintaining an eco-friendly fleet. Efforts are underway to adapt the Amiriya garage in the Cairo Governorate to cater specifically to electric buses, thereby bolstering the infrastructure necessary to support the growth of electric vehicle operations.

These comprehensive initiatives not only aim to promote sustainable transportation methods but also focus on minimizing environmental pollution. By upgrading the transportation system and enhancing efficiency, the ministry is working to create a healthier and greener urban environment for all citizens. Through these steps, the government hopes to foster an eco-conscious community while simultaneously addressing immediate transportation needs.
