Nigerian tycoon Aliko Dangote seeks collaborations with Egyptian investors.

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote recently underscored Egypt’s significance as a central market for his expansive industrial empire. During a press conference at the Egyptian Exchange in Cairo, he revealed plans for substantial investments in Egypt, coinciding with the exchange’s consideration of a new mechanism that would allow local investors to purchase shares in his companies, including a prominent oil refinery currently undergoing a large-scale share sale.

Investment Plans and Financial Goals

Dangote, recognized as Africa’s wealthiest individual with an estimated net worth of $51.7 billion, expressed his commitment to investing between $10 billion and $15 billion in Egypt. Although details regarding specific projects or timelines were not disclosed, reports indicated that he envisions Egypt playing a pivotal role in a broader $50 billion initiative aimed at industrializing the African continent. This strategic focus not only underscores Dangote’s ambitious plans but also highlights the crucial role Egypt is expected to play within the regional investment landscape.

Innovative Financial Mechanisms

During the conference, Omar Radwan, the chairman of the Egyptian Exchange, announced that the exchange is exploring the introduction of depositary receipts linked to shares of Dangote’s companies. This initiative would enable Egyptian institutional investors and family offices to invest in West African industrial assets, thereby creating a locally traded pathway for acquisitions. Radwan emphasized the potential for a partnership between the Cairo and Lagos exchanges, noting that discussions with Dangote’s leadership team were just the beginning of a collaborative effort.

Rehab Sallam, who heads international relations at the Egyptian Exchange, revealed that talks with Dangote Industries Ltd. executives are ongoing. In a show of support for this new opportunity, George Elombi, president of the African Export-Import Bank, encouraged Egyptian investors to participate in the offering, even in modest amounts, highlighting the long-term benefits of such investments.

Expanding Market Access for the Refinery

Dangote Petroleum Refinery is set to sell 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, aiming to raise approximately $1.6 billion, or up to $2.1 billion with an over-allotment option. The global offering has generated interest among investors from various regions, including Kenya and Ethiopia, who can participate through depositary receipts. However, the Egyptian proposal remains in its preliminary stages, leaving the timeline for its potential launch uncertain, especially as deadlines for the Nigerian offerings approach.

Vision for African Industrialization

During his address, Dangote stressed the importance of Africa moving away from merely exporting raw materials and toward establishing a robust industrial sector. He articulated a bold vision for the group, which includes achieving annual revenues of at least $100 billion by 2030. This ambitious growth, he stated, would be propelled through internal cash flow, equity investments, and strategic borrowing.

His outlined projects encompass a diverse array of sectors, including energy, petrochemicals, and agriculture, with significant undertakings such as a 530-kilometer subsea gas pipeline and plans to generate up to 10,000 megawatts of power. Additionally, he aims to expand Dangote Cement’s capacity to 100 million tons per year by 2030, as the Lagos refinery recently achieved a record capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.

This visit to Cairo follows Dangote’s earlier discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, where they explored potential investment avenues in key sectors like energy, fertilizer, and cement. Such a significant investment in Egypt would mark Dangote’s entry into the North African market, a region already established in cement, fertilizer, and burgeoning gas industries.
