POWERCHINA Enhances Wind Power and Energy Storage Initiatives to Foster Egypt’s Sustainable Energy Transition
In a significant step towards sustainable energy, the Power Construction Corporation of China, known as POWERCHINA, is rolling out a range of wind power projects in Egypt, amounting to over 1.8 gigawatts (GW). This initiative aims not only to bolster Egypt’s renewable energy sector but also to develop energy storage solutions and encourage local manufacturing. As China and Egypt celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations, environmentally-friendly development emerges as a crucial area for practical collaboration.
Ambitious Wind Power Projects
POWERCHINA’s wind power initiatives include the operational 500 MW Amunet Gulf of Suez Wind Project as well as two ongoing developments: a 1.1 GW Gulf of Suez Wind Project and the 202.5 MW Ras Ghareb Wind Project. These projects present unique challenges due to the region’s harsh climate, characterized by high temperatures, strong winds, and intricate geological conditions. To address these hurdles, POWERCHINA implemented optimized concrete temperature management and scheduled concrete pouring during cooler hours, carefully monitoring wind conditions during turbine installations. Notably, the Amunet Project completed its milestones ahead of schedule and earned the prestigious 2025 RoSPA Health and Safety Award for its commitment to safety.
Focus on Energy Storage and Local Manufacturing
Building on its extensive experience in international project execution and local capabilities, POWERCHINA is also venturing into energy storage and local manufacturing in Egypt. Recently, the company initiated the construction of Sungrow’s new energy storage facility in Ain Sokhna, occupying a sprawling 50,000-square-meter site. This facility is set to manufacture battery energy storage systems specifically for the Middle East and Africa, contributing significantly to Egypt’s clean energy supply chain while fostering local talent and manufacturing capabilities.
Job Creation and Skills Development
Since 2012, when POWERCHINA first launched its operations in Egypt, it has generated over 2,000 direct jobs and more than 10,000 indirect employment opportunities. The organization prioritizes skills development through onboarding and training initiatives, equipping over 350 professionals with competencies in traditional and renewable energy sectors, including quality control, health and safety compliance, and materials management. Furthermore, POWERCHINA collaborates closely with numerous Egyptian suppliers, subcontractors, and consultants to strengthen its project delivery ecosystem involving engineering services, material provision, and legal consultancy among others.
Strengthening Local Partnerships
Elalamya General Contracting, a local contractor, has been instrumental in collaborating with POWERCHINA since 2023 on the civil works for the Amunet Wind Project. This partnership has since expanded to encompass additional projects in the Gulf of Suez and Ras Ghareb. Mahmoud, the head of Elalamya, expressed appreciation for the fruitful collaboration and the camaraderie developed during the process, emphasizing hopes for continued joint efforts.
POWERCHINA’s expanding role in Egypt’s renewable energy landscape signifies a broader commitment to developing a sustainable clean energy ecosystem that integrates power generation, energy storage solutions, and localized manufacturing capabilities. The company is determined to partner further with Egyptian and international entities to enhance clean energy initiatives, aligning closely with both Egypt’s national energy strategy and the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
