Did Iran Play a Role in the Flydubai Flight Incident? Netanyahu Responds

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has commented on the recent incident involving a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which was subjected to an apparent hijacking attempt. While investigations are underway, Netanyahu has emphasized that it is too early to determine if Iran played a role in this frightening event.

Investigation Underway

During an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu expressed caution about jumping to conclusions regarding Iranian involvement in the hijacking attempt. He noted that the pilot accused of the attack is currently under investigation in Saudi Arabia, and there are plans for him to be transferred to the UAE for further inquiry. Netanyahu highlighted Israel’s intention to participate in this critical investigation, underlining the importance of understanding the motives behind such incidents.

The prime minister went on to assert that while the specifics of Iranian involvement remain uncertain, it is widely acknowledged that Iran harbors intentions to target Israelis, both domestically and abroad. He reiterated that the potential threat from Iran is not a secret, thus casting a shadow over regional security.

Threats from Iranian Proxies

Netanyahu also pointed to troubling signs from Iran’s regional allies, including Hamas and Hezbollah, indicating a possible escalation of attacks on Israel. This statement comes in the context of impending Israeli elections scheduled for October 27. He stated, “We have clear evidence of that alleged plan,” though he acknowledged that it remains unclear whether the attempted hijacking was part of a broader scheme orchestrated by these proxies.

This recent event coincides with the upcoming anniversary of Hamas’s attacks on Israel, which occurred on October 7, 2023, further intensifying concerns about security in the region. The continuing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran has also been a point of contention, particularly following a militarized confrontation in June 2025.

The Flight’s Dramatic Incident

The flydubai flight incident has drawn significant international attention, particularly due to the actions of Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who was severely injured during the attack. Reports indicate that his co-pilot, an Omani national, stabbed him mid-flight. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to alert authorities and opened the cockpit door, enabling passengers to intervene and subdue the assailant.

Following the intensive situation, two off-duty flydubai pilots aboard the flight took command and safely landed the aircraft at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. With approximately 180 passengers, most of whom were Israeli, the flight was eventually redirected, and those on board were later flown to Tel Aviv on an alternative flight organized by the airline.

Machchhar remains hospitalized in Saudi Arabia, where he is receiving medical treatment for his injuries. The Indian Embassy has confirmed that his condition is now stable, providing a sense of relief amid the chaos surrounding the incident.

In summary, while investigations continue into the motives and potential perpetrators of the attempted hijacking, the geopolitical implications are significant. Netanyahu’s remarks reflect a wider concern over Iranian threats in the region, which remain a complex and evolving issue that merits close scrutiny from both local and international observers.
