Iraq’s football head coach, Graham Arnold, recently unveiled the squad for the “Lions of Mesopotamia” ahead of the Arabian Gulf Cup, dubbed “Gulf 27.” As the team prepares to compete in Jeddah, Arnold’s focus is firmly set on clinching the title, emphasizing the tournament’s relevance as a pivotal step in their preparations for upcoming Asian competitions.
Importance of the Gulf Cup
In a press conference, Arnold made it clear that he views the Gulf tournament as more than just an exhibition. “I don’t have the concept of a ‘friendly’ match versus an official one. The Gulf Cup holds tremendous significance for us, serving as a vital precursor to our Asian commitments. Each match we play will be approached with the intention to perform strongly,” he stated. With a well-prepared strategy, the coach insists on competing at the highest level throughout the competition.
Arnold meticulously selected his 35-player roster, which had been registered a month prior with the International Federation’s approval. He is determined that the individuals chosen will exhibit utmost dedication in representing Iraq on the international stage. The players are expected to furnish their best efforts as they embark on this prestigious tournament.
Muntadher Majed’s Status
Discussions surrounding expatriate player Muntadher Majed have sparked considerable debate. In response, Arnold confirmed that he has been in direct communication with Majed. “I want to make it clear that we are in touch, but currently he has opted to concentrate on his club commitments and future,” he revealed.
Emphasizing his expectations, Arnold added, “I require players who are fully committed to the national team. I hope Muntadher resolves his international situation swiftly. Our aim is to win this tournament—I didn’t come to merely make an appearance.” His firm stance highlights the necessity for unity and commitment within the squad as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
Adjustments Due to Injuries
The Gulf Cup regulations, combined with recent injuries to key players, necessitated alterations to the squad. Arnold disclosed that Hussein Ali needs surgical intervention, which marks a significant loss for the team.
Regarding the goalkeeping position, the decision has been entrusted to the goalkeeping coach. Arnold stated, “Ahmed Basil has been chosen as the national team goalkeeper, with two other goalkeepers also making a positive impression.” His remarks underline the importance of selecting players based on their performance and readiness rather than reputation alone.
Arnold’s message to the team was resolute, calling for mental preparedness. “Player selection was based on all the criteria I observed during the season. I believe their skill level has improved, even in challenging weather. I want them to approach the Gulf Cup with unwavering belief in their capability to win. This competition is crucial for the Gulf region, creating a chance for them to instill pride in their families and country.”
