Exploring the Trade of Social Media Accounts in Iraq

Navigating the Risks of Buying Social Media Accounts in Iraq

In an age where social media presence is crucial for business, many entrepreneurs are seeking shortcuts to build their audience. Riam Fadhil, a 25-year-old from Baghdad, opted to purchase an established social media account to quickly launch her cake and pastry business. However, this decision led to unexpected challenges and raised important questions about the ethics and legality of such transactions.

Challenges of Account Purchases

Faced with the challenge of building a following from scratch, Riam invested around one million Iraqi dinars (approximately $760) in an account boasting about 300,000 followers. Though she anticipated immediate success, the reality was starkly different. Most of the followers were male, and as soon as she began sharing her posts, the numbers plummeted. Real engagement was nonexistent, and the feedback she received was largely negative or derogatory. When she sought a refund from the seller, she was met with refusal, as he maintained that her purchase was final.

The concern over buying social media accounts has become more prevalent, with reports of existing accounts being sold for profit alongside stolen accounts being resold. This trend indicates a growing market, but it also highlights significant risks that buyers may not fully comprehend.

Legal Implications and Security Risks

Legal experts express concern over the implications of purchasing social media accounts in Iraq, where existing laws do not explicitly outlaw this practice. Buyers and sellers may navigate a legal gray area, as there is no specific regulation governing the sale of accounts. Although platforms like Facebook and Instagram have strict policies against buying and selling accounts, enforcement can vary, and the penalties for violating these rules can include permanent bans.

According to legal analyst Mohammed Jumaa, the absence of a law directly prohibiting the sale provides a loophole. However, if an account includes personal data or breaches privacy rights, both parties could be held liable. Transactions that lead to criminal activity, such as extortion or human trafficking, may also expose individuals to serious legal consequences.

Scams and Fraud in the Market

The risk of scams is another pressing concern for those attempting to buy social media accounts. Jamil Rashid, a 20-year-old, found himself in a difficult situation after purchasing an account through a Telegram page. After the transaction, the seller vanished, leaving him with nothing but a loss of money. Such incidents reveal the inherent vulnerabilities in the account trading market, where buyers often lack any real assurance of security or recourse.

Marketplaces for account trading have proliferated, with both Telegram and Facebook groups listing numerous accounts and their prices. Sellers can create accounts by posting popular content that attracts followers, but the ecosystem remains rife with deceit, especially since written contracts are uncommon.

Understanding the Technical Challenges

Experts caution that buying and selling accounts often results in losing transactions. Firas Faqouri, a technology specialist, emphasizes that platforms like TikTok and Instagram connect accounts to individual data and algorithms. As a result, a shift in ownership may lead to drastic changes in audience engagement, causing performance issues or even suspension of the account.

Moreover, security remains a significant risk; if a seller has any means to reclaim the account after the sale, the buyer is exposed to the risk of losing both their investment and the account itself. Consequently, potential buyers must exercise caution and demand reliable guarantees to ensure they don’t find themselves victims of fraud.

In summary, while buying social media accounts may seem like a fast track to gaining a following, the multitude of risks—including legal implications, scams, and technical challenges—requires careful consideration. Entrepreneurs should weigh the potential benefits against the significant dangers before engaging in such transactions.
