Iraq Aims to Increase Oil Production in Kirkuk to 450,000 Barrels per Day

Iraq is gearing up to boost its oil production significantly, aiming for an output of 450,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) from its Kirkuk oil fields while also increasing gas production to approximately 500 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d). This ambitious initiative was announced by Oil Minister Basim Al-Abadi on October 15, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency.

Transition of Operations

The Ministry of Oil has outlined a strategic move by transferring operational control of four key fields—Kirkuk, Bai Hassan, Khabbaz, and Jambur—from the North Oil Company and North Gas Company to a newly formed joint operating body. This transition is seen as essential to enhancing the oil and gas sector in Iraq, aligning with the government’s long-term development plans. The initiative emphasizes collaboration and a streamlined approach to manage these vital energy resources effectively.

Partnership with BP

A crucial element of this project is the partnership with BP, a well-established player in the global oil and gas industry. Al-Abadi highlighted that the collaboration aims to overcome significant operational challenges that may arise during the production phase. BP’s expertise is expected to facilitate the achievement of production targets while ensuring that operations align with international standards. Such partnerships not only elevate production capabilities but also enhance technological advancements within the local industry.

Support Mechanisms and Community Development

To ensure the project’s success, the Ministry of Oil plans to provide extensive support to BP and its teams, with involvement from both the North Oil Company and North Gas Company. The cooperation will operate under the supervision of ministry officials focusing on extraction and gas affairs. Additionally, a key component of this initiative includes the training of ministry personnel to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for modern oil production techniques. Technical expertise and advanced technologies will also be shared as part of the collaboration.

Moreover, Al-Abadi emphasized the importance of community services as part of the project. Enhancements to local infrastructure will not only benefit the communities surrounding the oil fields but will also fortify the social fabric through investment in public facilities and services, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to its citizen’s welfare.

Future Projections

As part of this multilayered plan, a contract with BP was approved by Iraq’s Council of Ministers in March 2025, which lays the groundwork for the rehabilitation and development of the Kirkuk fields. This contract aims for an ultimate goal of achieving a peak production of 420,000 bbl/d, alongside gas utilization reaching 400 mmscf/d. The government’s proactive approach in partnering with industry leaders indicates a promising trajectory for Iraq’s energy sector, showcasing its potential to not only revitalize its oil output but also support a stable economic growth path.

Through this coordinated effort, Iraq is not only positioning itself as a significant player in the global energy market but is also reinforcing the importance of sustainable development and community engagement within its economic frameworks.
