Iraq has delayed the initiation of trial operations at the Grand Faw port due to the escalating security situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. This major infrastructure project, which has been in development for over ten years, finds itself at a standstill as the regional instability has raised concerns over safety.
Progress on Grand Faw Port Construction
Despite the setbacks, significant advancements have been made in the construction of the Grand Faw port. Hussein Ahmed, the director of media and government communications at Iraq’s Ministry of Transport, announced that the immersed tunnel is almost finished, with 98% completion, while the interchange yard stands at 90% completion. Additionally, all five initial berths have been completed. This progress underscores Iraq’s commitment to developing the port, which is one of its flagship infrastructure projects.
Security Concerns Delaying Operations
The Ministry of Transport had been gearing up to transition into the trial operations phase; however, Ahmed emphasized that the current security environment has necessitated an unexpected delay. He remarked, “The trial phase requires a safe environment,” indicating that the commissioning process will only resume once the situation in the Strait of Hormuz stabilizes. The ongoing crisis has also impacted associated equipment work, further complicating the timeline for moving forward.
Significance of the Grand Faw Port
Located just south of Basra and adjacent to the northern Gulf, the Grand Faw port serves as a crucial element of Iraq’s vision for improved infrastructure and economic growth. The strategic port aims to become a vital link in the proposed Development Road, which is a major road and rail corridor extending approximately 1,200 kilometers north through Iraq to Turkey and Europe. This project is being touted as a potential alternative for the Asia-Europe trade route, emphasizing Iraq’s aspiration to boost its trade capabilities.
Investment and Future Prospects
In 2020, South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction was awarded a significant contract worth $2.62 billion to oversee the first phase of the Grand Faw port project. This contract encompasses not only the construction of the initial berths but also the establishment of a container yard and dredging operations. The designed container capacity for the initial terminal is around 3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) annually, showcasing the port’s potential to handle substantial trade volumes once fully operational.
The successful completion and operation of Grand Faw port will not only enhance Iraq’s logistics framework but also elevate its standing in global trade networks.
