Iraq Suspends Tariffs on Poultry and Eggs Due to Increasing Food Prices

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture has recently announced proactive measures to tackle rising food inflation in local retail markets, particularly targeting the escalating prices of table eggs. This initiative, which was unveiled on October 10, 2026, represents the government’s commitment to ensure food affordability for its citizens.

Emergency Market Interventions

Under the guidance of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the Iraqi federal government has suspended customs duties and import taxes on imported table eggs, poultry, and livestock. Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi has emphasized the importance of these measures to bolster food supplies and stabilize prices for consumers. This intervention is a response to the increasing costs that have burdened households across the nation.

Targeted Administrative Actions

During an interview with the Iraqi News Agency (INA), spokesperson Qusay Al-Hattab highlighted the swift actions taken by the Minister of Agriculture to address sudden price increases affecting essential goods. By waiving customs and border tariffs, the government aims to enhance the flow of vital poultry and livestock products into the market, fostering competition and protecting consumer purchasing power, particularly in light of recent fluctuations in currency values.

The Ministry of Agriculture had previously enforced strict import restrictions on specific greenhouse and open-field vegetables, such as eggplant, tomatoes, and cucumbers. These measures were designed to defend domestic farmers during peak harvest times when local produce is abundant. The ministry’s vigilant approach reflects its commitment to balancing the interests of consumers and producers alike.

Real-Time Monitoring and Oversight

The seasonal harvest cycles for these crops typically last between 40 to 50 days. During this period, monitoring teams from the Department of Planning and Follow-up actively survey major wholesale markets in Baghdad, including Jamila, Al-Rasheed, and Zweini. Field inspectors closely track commodity volumes and price changes, providing timely assessments to help determine when supply levels warrant lifting import bans.

Al-Hattab has indicated that the recent fluctuations in retail prices, particularly the rise in the cost of table eggs, are partly due to merchant speculation and an increased U.S. dollar exchange rate. This dual influence has placed considerable strain on consumers, prompting the Ministry to take action.

Ensuring Price Stability for Consumers

The Ministry of Agriculture is committed to maintaining vigilant oversight across wholesale distribution points. Regular updates, including daily comparative price indexes for commodities, are published on its official platform, ensuring transparency and access to information. The ministry seeks to effectively balance its protective measures for domestic poultry producers with the need to provide consumers with affordable food options.

As the Iraqi government implements these emergency market interventions, the objective is clear: to mitigate food inflation and ensure that the basic needs of citizens are met in a challenging economic environment. The proactive stance taken by the ministry not only seeks to stabilize prices but also fosters a more resilient market capable of withstanding future fluctuations.
