Mount Vernon Quilt Group Honors Iraq Veteran with Quilt of Valor

On October 18, the Grateful Quilters of Ohio, based in Mount Vernon, honored Nick Shannon with a distinguished Quilt of Valor. This heartfelt gesture aims to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans in service to their country. Belinda Hughes, one of the quilters, expressed the essence of this award, stating, “This quilt is an expression of gratitude meant to thank and comfort you.” The Quilt of Valor serves as a tangible symbol of thanks for the dedication and bravery shown by service members like Nick.

Celebrating Nick Shannon’s Military Service

Nick Shannon, recognized for his dedication, served in the United States Army National Guard from 2017 to 2025. His parents, Rick and Laura Shannon, felt proud to nominate him for this honor, with Rick also being a veteran himself. “We are here to honor United States Army National Guard Specialist Nick Shannon,” Rick remarked during the presentation. Nick’s role with the 16th Engineer Brigade of the Ohio Army National Guard involved significant responsibilities as a geospatial engineer. His expertise was crucial in providing critical visualizations of terrains, ensuring that troops were better prepared before entering unfamiliar environments.

Nick’s deployment to Kuwait and Iraq from 2020 to 2021 as part of Operation Inherent Resolve showcased his skills on an international stage. While stationed in the Middle East, he provided vital geospatial support for both U.S. and allied forces across Kuwait, Iraq, and Syria. Thanks to his tireless efforts, he significantly contributed to the success of missions undertaken during this challenging time.

A Lifelong Recognition

Nick’s exemplary service has been acknowledged through multiple commendations, highlighting his dedication and professionalism. Among his awards are the Army Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and several others, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism decorations. Each of these accolades tells the story of his commitment to duty and demonstrates the high regard in which he is held by his peers and commanders alike.

During the presentation of the Quilt of Valor, Hughes expressed profound appreciation for Nick’s service. She welcomed him home and conveyed the heartfelt gratitude of not just the quilting team, but of the entire community. “Thank you for your service, and thank you for allowing us to recognize you,” she stated, solidifying the emotional weight behind this meaningful award.

The Quilts of Valor Mission

The Quilts of Valor movement has an inspiring origin, founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts when her son was deployed to Iraq. Since its inception, over 457,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded to veterans, encapsulating the mission of providing comfort and healing through quilted art. Each quilt is not merely a piece of fabric; it is a lifetime award that is neither bought nor sold, but earned.

A Quilt of Valor consists of multiple layers, symbolizing different elements of military service. The vibrant top layer, made from various fabrics, represents the diverse faces of those who have served. The inner batting embodies warmth, signifying comfort and the healing power of community support. The backing provides strength, as it ties together the thousands of stitches that symbolize not only the veterans’ journeys but also their families and communities supporting one another.

Through initiatives like this, the Quilts of Valor Foundation emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and honoring veterans, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation that resonates beyond the fabric of each quilt.
