Pro-Iran groups support Tehran, claim US airspace infringements during disarmament conflict

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), a coalition of pro-Iran armed groups, has publicly reaffirmed its allegiance to Tehran, criticizing the United States for its alleged breaches of Iraqi airspace. These accusations intensify concerns regarding the weapons management of these factions in the context of state control.

Support for Iran Amid US Actions

During a recent statement, the IRI condemned U.S. military operations, labeling them as acts of aggression against Iran. The group emphasized that supporting Tehran against perceived threats from U.S.-Israeli forces is a moral imperative. The statement highlighted the struggle of Iraq against foreign interference, accusing the Iraqi government of succumbing to U.S. pressures by closing air routes and border crossings with Iran. They argue that such actions undermine Iraq’s sovereignty and hinder autonomous decision-making.

Challenges in Disarmament and Sovereignty

Discussions remain contentious between Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s administration and the powerful Iran-aligned factions regarding disarmament. Although the government had initially set a timeline for disarmament to coincide with the withdrawal of U.S. troops at the end of September, many groups have since resisted this timetable. Some factions claim that the guarantee of national sovereignty must precede any disarmament agreements. The IRI detailed that they have documented 171 violations of Iraqi airspace by U.S. forces as part of its justification for continued military readiness.

Internal Divisions Among Armed Factions

The IRI’s stance is not universally shared among Iraqi armed factions. While some groups like Harakat Ansar Allah and Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada have shown willingness to engage with the government’s disarmament measures, others, including Kataib Hezbollah and Harakat al-Nujaba, are resolutely opposed. The recent developments reveal that these factions are split on how to approach the government’s directives, leading to an environment of uncertainty regarding Iraq’s disarmament direction.

Legal Consequences for Non-compliance

In response to ongoing tensions, the Iraqi government has threatened legal repercussions against those obstructing the disarmament process or inciting violence. This includes pursuing restitution for factions uncooperative with the disarmament efforts. Prime Minister Zaidi reiterated the government’s commitment to completing the disarmament process by June 30, 2027, aiming to ensure that all weaponry is under state management. The government insists on establishing an Iraq where only state-sanctioned security forces retain weapons, highlighting its plan to navigate future security collaborations.

These unfolding dynamics pose significant challenges for Iraq as it strives to balance internal sovereignty with external pressures. The ability of the government to enforce disarmament amidst diverse factional interests will be crucial for long-term stability and autonomy in the region.
