Shafaq News: Teenager Wounded by ISIS-Era Explosive in Al-Anbar, Iraq

A recent incident in Al-Qaim, located in western Al-Anbar province, highlights the ongoing dangers post-conflict regions face due to leftover explosive devices. These remnants pose significant threats to the local population, particularly young individuals.

Teenager Injured by Explosive Device

On Tuesday, a teenage boy named Suleiman Abd Dahham Al-Jashaami, born in 2010, sustained injuries when an explosive device, left behind by ISIS, detonated. This unfortunate event took place in the Al-Wahat area, specifically behind Dour Al-Aramel Street in the Al-Obaidi subdistrict. The situation underscores the persistent risks that communities in previously affected areas continue to endure long after military operations have ceased.

Efforts to Clear Explosive Remnants

In response to the ongoing danger posed by unexploded ordnance, local authorities have made considerable efforts to mitigate risks. Between January 1 and June 26, 2026, Civil Defense teams successfully removed a total of 1,593 unexploded munitions from various locations in Al-Anbar. Furthermore, the Iraqi Army’s Field Engineering Battalion played a crucial role by destroying 897 explosive remnants. These efforts are vital for enhancing community safety and stability.

Awareness and Community Safety

Despite the efforts to clear remnants of conflict, ongoing community awareness and education regarding the dangers of unexploded devices remain essential. Local governments and NGOs should prioritize educational campaigns to inform residents about how to identify and avoid these hazardous materials. Equipping the community with knowledge can empower them to report potential dangers, ultimately minimizing future incidents.

The Path Forward

As Iraq continues to rebuild, addressing the threat of unexploded ordnance will be critical for ensuring the safety and resilience of affected communities. Continued investment in clearance operations and community education will pave the way for a safer environment. The tragic incident in Al-Qaim serves as a reminder of the importance of these efforts and the need for sustained vigilance against remnants of the past. Only through a focused and collective approach can the risks be effectively managed and communities can move towards a more secure future.
