US imposes sanctions on two European airlines for Iraq airspace violations.

The US Department of Transportation has imposed a fine of $425,000 on Air France and KLM for operating over 130 Delta-coded flights through the restricted airspace of Iraq between 2022 and 2025. This decision underscores the importance of adhering to aviation regulations, especially in regions affected by conflict.

Punishments for Air France and KLM

The penalties are broken down as follows: Air France received a fine of $105,000 for operating more than 30 flights within the Baghdad Flight Information Region (FIR) during the period from April 2022 to November 2025. On the other hand, KLM was penalized with a significantly higher fine of $320,000 for conducting more than 100 flights between January 2022 and May 2025. Such actions prompted the US Department of Transportation to act decisively, as these violations could pose serious risks.

Investigation Findings by the Department

An investigation carried out by the Department’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection revealed that both airlines had failed to comply with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations that pertain to flights operating under US airline codes. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the seriousness of the matter, stating, “During the Trump Administration, flying under a US code and following safety rules was not optional. We will ensure accountability for any airline that neglects to adhere to our regulations. The paramount concern here is passenger safety—there will be no exceptions.”

Both Air France and KLM have been ordered to stop any further violations immediately. The FAA’s regulations prohibit both US and commercial operators from flying below 32,000 feet within the Baghdad FIR due to heightened security concerns in the region. Consequently, these restrictions also apply to foreign airlines operating under the codes of US carriers.

Understanding the Iraq Airspace Restrictions

The restrictions in question were amended and extended in October 2020 and are set to remain in effect until October 26, 2027. The continuous updates of these regulations highlight the ongoing concerns regarding safety in areas prone to conflict and instability. Airlines must be acutely aware of and comply with these guidelines to avoid not just financial penalties but also to ensure the safety of their passengers.

In summary, the recent fines imposed on Air France and KLM serve as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to aviation regulations, particularly in sensitive regions like Iraq. The US Department of Transportation is committed to enforcing these rules to safeguard passengers and maintain aviation safety as a top priority.
