On Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu embarked on a visit to the Leviathan natural gas platform, accompanied by Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen. This visit underscores the strategic importance of natural gas in Israel’s economic framework, with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) emphasizing its value as a national asset and significant revenue generator.

Leviathan Gas Field’s Economic Impact

Since it commenced operations in December 2019, the Leviathan gas field has contributed a staggering NIS 32 billion to the Israeli treasury. Projections indicate that the cumulative revenue from the combined natural gas and oil sectors in Israel could surpass NIS 350 billion. This surge in revenue is primarily due to energy export agreements with neighboring countries, especially Egypt. Notably, in December 2025, Israel entered into a substantial natural gas export agreement with Egypt valued at approximately NIS 112 billion, reinforcing the resource’s pivotal role in both economic and diplomatic contexts.

Benefits for Israeli Households

The PMO has highlighted how domestic natural gas production has benefitted Israeli families financially, reportedly saving them thousands of shekels each year. Energy costs in Israel are said to be more than 20% lower than those in EU nations and other Western countries. This reduction in energy prices is partly attributed to the abundant supply of natural gas from the Leviathan field, thus enhancing the overall affordability of energy for everyday consumers.

Future Investments in Energy Infrastructure

As Israel looks to the future, the government is committed to identifying new natural gas reserves and upgrading its energy infrastructure. This is in response to increasing electricity demands, particularly from data centers powered by artificial intelligence technologies. Such advances are critical for maintaining an efficient and reliable energy supply to support the growing technological landscape.

Production Efficiency and Security Measures

Recent reports indicate that Leviathan has surpassed its expected annual production capacity, producing 15.8 billion cubic meters (BCM), compared to the earlier forecast of 14 BCM. During Netanyahu and Cohen’s recent visit, they received an update on security measures in place to protect the offshore platform. The Leviathan gas field had previously experienced disruptions, being temporarily shut down for over 30 days amid security concerns related to broader regional tensions, but operations resumed in early April.

Efforts to enhance the energy sector not only position Israel as a formidable player in the regional energy market but also underscore the government’s strategy to bolster national security through energy independence. As these developments unfold, the attention remains on how Israel will navigate its energy resources in the context of both economic growth and geopolitical stability.
