Charlotte’s Jewish Community Commemorates Three Years Since the October 7 Assault in Israel

Charlotte’s Jewish community recently observed the third anniversary of the devastating October 7, 2023 attack in Israel, a day that remains etched deeply in their memory. The somber reflections on that tragic day have underscored the concerns surrounding safety and security for community members as they gathered in remembrance.

The Impact of the October 7 Attack

On October 7, 2023, more than 1,000 individuals lost their lives and several hundred were taken hostage as Hamas militants launched an unprecedented assault on Israel’s border communities with Gaza. This attack became the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust, leaving an indelible mark on the global Jewish community and prompting widespread grief and outrage.

In the aftermath, the conflict has escalated dramatically, with tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, including women and children, also suffering casualties as Israel embarked on military actions in Gaza. The destruction within Gaza has been catastrophic, displacing a significant portion of its 2 million residents and perpetuating a cycle of violence that continues to affect both sides in the conflict.

Rising Antisemitism and Community Response

Since the October attacks, incidents of antisemitism have surged across the United States. According to a 2025 report from the FBI, antisemitic actions constituted 63% of religion-based hate crimes. In light of this increase, leaders from the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte are committed to addressing rising antisemitism locally, prioritizing education and community safety as integral aspects of their mission.

Adam Kolett, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte, emphasized the emotional impact of the events on October 7. “The attacks were not just a distant occurrence; they resonated with us right here in Charlotte,” Kolett stated. This sentiment has fueled the federation’s efforts to ensure safe spaces for prayer and community gathering.

Securing Community Spaces

Members of the Charlotte Jewish community recently convened at Shalom Park to honor the memory of attack victims, creating a poignant atmosphere filled with photos and candles. However, since the tragedy, the federation has faced challenges including the discovery of antisemitic signage on their property earlier this year. Kolett noted the reliance on law enforcement to bolster security measures, stating, “Everyone works very hard to keep us safe,” highlighting collaborative efforts with local and federal authorities.

In response to rising tensions, the Jewish Federation has launched the “Outshine Hate” campaign, aimed at educating the community about Judaism and addressing the historical roots of antisemitism. “Understanding why some harbor this age-old hatred is crucial,” Kolett explained. “Education can dispel confusion fueled by social media.”

A Call for Unity and Understanding

As Charlotte’s Jewish community reflects on the horrors of October 7, they seek to foster dialogue and understanding with others. “Support from those who want to learn more about our community and Israel provides comfort,” Kolett affirmed. The community acknowledges the importance of passionate discussions, yet believes that the overarching goal should be creating a safer tomorrow for everyone.

In this somber observance, the message is clear: the events of October 7 will not be forgotten. The commitment to education, safety, and community solidarity remains strong as they face ongoing challenges together. Through unity and understanding, the Charlotte Jewish community hopes to pave the way towards a future characterized by respect and coexistence.
