Connecting Through Camp: The Impact of Campers2Gether

This summer, twelve-year-old Itamar from Israel embarked on a transformative experience at the Sababa Beachaway Camp in Virginia, joining the Campers2Gether initiative. This program aims to establish meaningful connections between Israeli and North American Jewish teens, offering participants like Itamar a much-needed respite from the harsh realities of conflict back home.

Building Confidence and Friendships

“It was an incredible opportunity for me to meet new people,” Itamar shared, reflecting on his time at camp. Initially shy and lacking self-confidence, he soon discovered the warmth and openness of his American peers. “They made it easy for me to engage with them,” he added. As the days went by, Itamar’s confidence blossomed in this nurturing environment. The absence of phones and social media allowed him to focus on building genuine friendships. “It’s nice to disconnect and talk face-to-face,” he said, eagerly anticipating staying in touch with the friends he made during his camp experience.

The Vision Behind Campers2Gether

Launched in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks in Israel, Campers2Gether aims to provide relief for Israeli teens facing the emotional toll of ongoing violence and insecurity. Nathan Schachter, the program’s director, explains that the initiative was designed to create a safe space for youth impacted by trauma. Initially seen as a temporary solution, the program has evolved into a cornerstone of connection and support among young Jews worldwide. Organizations like the Jewish Agency for Israel and several philanthropic foundations have played key roles in bringing Campers2Gether to fruition, ensuring its growth and sustainability.

Expanding Horizons for Young Jewish Leaders

This summer marked the third year of the Campers2Gether initiative, which successfully brought over 700 Israeli teens to 34 Jewish summer camps across North America. The primary goals of the program are twofold: to provide a joyous escape for Israeli youths while also fostering understanding and relationships with their North American counterparts. Both groups gain a unique perspective on their shared Jewish identity through communal activities, informal discussions, and shared experiences at camp.

Given recent travel limitations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for programs like Campers2Gether has grown. Many Jewish teens internationally have felt disconnected from their Israeli peers, and the camp serves as one of the few platforms for meaningful interaction. Participants learn about each other’s lives and cultures in ways that are far more engaging than what headlines and social media can portray.

Looking Ahead: The Lasting Bonds Formed

The friendships formed during Campers2Gether extend well beyond the camp session, an impact that has become increasingly evident. As Itamar noted, the connections established at camp are both real and authentic, resonating deeply with those involved. Camp director Eytan Graubart detailed how the integration of Israeli campers has enriched the cultural fabric of Camp Ramah, where many of these experiences occur. He emphasized the vital role of Israeli culture in making American campers feel more connected to Israel.

Mark Wilf, chairman of the Jewish Agency Board of Governors, highlights that during times of tension, initiatives like Campers2Gether foster resilience and community among young Jews. By bridging the gap between Israeli and North American youth, these shared experiences bolster a stronger, more unified Jewish identity for generations to come.

In the coming years, Campers2Gether plans to expand its outreach, including new initiatives aimed at supporting the children of IDF reservists. Through this ongoing effort, the program not only addresses the immediate needs of youth impacted by conflict but also strengthens the enduring fabric of Jewish life and connection worldwide.
