Head of Jewish Agency: Israel Has Capacity for One Million Additional Immigrants

Israel’s Plan for One Million New Immigrants

In light of escalating global antisemitism, Israel is preparing to welcome a significant influx of Jewish immigrants. According to Doron Almog, chairman of the Jewish Agency, the nation can accommodate up to one million newcomers, provided proper resources are allocated for their integration.

Economic Strength to Support Immigration

Speaking at the “Absorbing the Next Million” conference in Jerusalem, Almog emphasized Israel’s robust economy as a backdrop for this ambitious goal. He highlighted that Israel is well-equipped to manage a large wave of immigration, contingent on national coordination and resource mobilization. The conference convened top government officials, community leaders, and members of various immigrant populations to discuss strategies for effectively integrating newcomers into Israeli society.

Many at the conference echoed Almog’s sentiments about the crucial need for strategic planning. The looming threat of increased antisemitism worldwide necessitates a proactive approach for Jewish communities abroad. Almog urged the establishment of emergency assistance networks and early-warning systems to safeguard these communities from potential threats.

The Potential Impact of Antisemitism

Almog’s vision is not new; he had previously raised the possibility of one million Jewish immigrants coming to Israel. His predictions have gained urgency amid the alarming rise of antisemitism across various countries. During the Jewish year 5786, Israel saw just over 20,000 immigrants from more than 100 nations, with Russia, France, and the US being the leading source countries. Nonetheless, projections suggest this figure could grow substantially based on current socio-political dynamics.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also underscored the economic implications of this immigration wave, highlighting that bringing in new immigrants could serve as a powerful engine for economic growth. He indicated that the attention of international investors remains favorable toward Israel and presented this situation as a crucial opportunity to boost the economy while supporting Jewish communities globally.

Integration Challenges and Solutions

While the influx of immigrants is welcomed, attention must also be directed toward the integration process once they arrive. The conference spotlighted the necessity of preparing for the challenges these newcomers will face, particularly in language acquisition—a significant barrier for many. Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli emphasized that immigrants often struggle with daily life if they lack sufficient Hebrew or English language skills.

Almog’s initiative has sparked discussions about creating comprehensive integration plans that go beyond immediate accommodation. Community leaders, including Roi Aviksis from Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael, highlighted the importance of education in fostering a sense of belonging among new immigrants. They advocated for stronger connections between immigrant families and local communities, which would aid in their social and economic integration.

Vision for a Welcoming Society

In their joint statement, the co-directors of Habayta, Netanel Rotenberg and Yosef Hoter, called for a long-term, multi-faceted approach to absorption. They stated, “Israel must prepare today to absorb the next million immigrants,” which includes fostering a strong sense of community, belonging, and opportunity. Their goal is to ensure that every new immigrant feels at home shortly after arriving.

Through their diverse community support structure, operating in multiple languages, organizations like Habayta aim to address the unique needs of immigrants, highlight shared histories, and reinforce communal connections. The collective efforts of Israel’s government, civic leaders, and community organizations are pivotal to achieving a successful and inclusive immigration experience for newcomers.

This strategic convergence of resources and planning underscores Israel’s commitment to welcoming its Jewish diaspora back home, equipping them not just to survive but to thrive in their new environment.
