The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) recently reported the elimination of Muhammad Muhsen Nimr Yazji, a leader of Hamas’s Shati Battalion, during aerial strikes in Gaza City. This operation, announced on Thursday evening, is part of ongoing efforts against Hamas militants involved in hostage-taking activities.
Previously Held Hostages
The IDF’s actions targeted Yazji, who was identified as holding several former hostages, including Emily Damari, Romi Gonen, and Matan Angrest. Damari’s abduction occurred at her home in Kfar Aza, where she was taken along with Gali and Ziv Berman. In a separate incident, Gonen was kidnapped from the Nova music festival near Kibbutz Re’im. Both Damari and Gonen were eventually released on January 19, 2025, alongside Doron Steinbrecher.
Angrest’s Captivity
Matan Angrest, another notable former hostage, faced a harrowing experience when he was captured from his tank near Nahal Oz. During this attack, he tragically lost three crewmates—Capt. Daniel Perez, St.-Sgt. Itay Chen, and Sgt. Tomer Leibovitz—to Hamas fire. Angrest was released on October 13, 2025, after enduring his captivity amidst the ongoing conflicts.
Further Strikes Against Hamas
In addition to targeting Yazji, the IDF carried out a separate attack on Tuesday that resulted in the death of Muhammad Fawzi Muhammad Awad Gamal, another Hamas operative affiliated with the Daraj Tuffah Battalion. These military operations emphasize the IDF’s commitment to dismantling key terrorist leadership and infrastructure in the region.
As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, the IDF remains vigilant in its operations against Hamas, focusing on eliminating figures who pose significant threats to Israeli citizens and military personnel. The ongoing strife underscores the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and highlights the challenges faced in ensuring safety and security in the region.
