President Isaac Herzog is approaching the final stages of his seven-year term, with nearly two years remaining. In this pivotal period, he aims to focus on three major priorities: enhancing diplomatic relations, fostering a strong sense of Jewish community worldwide, and bridging divisions within Israeli society.
Strengthening Diplomatic Relations and Community Bonds
Herzog has been particularly attentive to communities that have faced an increase in antisemitism, especially since October 7. To address these challenges, he plans to increase his visits to these affected areas, emphasizing a close connection to the Jewish diaspora. His major initiatives, notably “Voice of the People,” aim to unite Jewish individuals from Israel, North America, and beyond. This initiative seeks to collaborate on future leadership, laying the groundwork for a cohesive Jewish identity. Applications for the next cohort of this program are slated to be opened soon, utilizing an algorithm for the selection process to ensure inclusivity.
Herzog is calling upon all individuals dedicated to shaping the future of the Jewish community to submit their applications. In tandem, another project, “Time to Talk,” is designed to mend societal rifts and promote understanding and respect among diverse segments within Israel. This initiative highlights Herzog’s commitment to fostering a culture of open dialogue in a politically charged environment.
The Role of Diplomacy in Current Events
As Israel heads toward the upcoming Knesset elections in October, Herzog believes that traditional values of negotiation and mutual respect will be put to the test. His diplomatic efforts have included visits to around 35 countries since taking office in July 2021, engaging in state visits and participating in significant events, such as King Charles’ coronation and the World Economic Forum in Davos. Each of these trips serves a diplomatic purpose, as Herzog strives to counteract the wave of misinformation and criticism Israel has faced, particularly after October 7.
