Islamic Relief is sounding the alarm regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where ongoing violence has tragically resulted in immense loss of life and suffering. The charity, based in the United Kingdom, has highlighted the urgent need for global action as conditions continue to deteriorate amid relentless Israeli assaults.
Devastating Impact on the Palestinian Population
According to Islamic Relief, Israeli airstrikes have inflicted catastrophic damage on the Palestinian population, with reports indicating that a person has been killed or injured every 90 minutes since the ceasefire was declared in October of last year. The organization has documented at least 1,454 Palestinian fatalities and more than 5,000 injuries over the past twelve months, with a heartbreaking emphasis on the loss of life among children—at least 320 are confirmed dead, translating to nearly one child lost each day.
The Palestinian Health Ministry’s figures confirm the alarming toll: 1,471 individuals have been killed and 5,189 injured since the ceasefire declaration, which includes four casualties and 28 injuries reported in just a 24-hour period. Furthermore, the ministry reveals that since October 2023, the total number of fatalities attributed to Israeli operations exceeds 74,254.
Continued Violence and Humanitarian Blocks
Recent reports detail ongoing violence, with a recent Israeli airstrike in central Khan Younis resulting in multiple injuries, and the death of a Palestinian southeast of Deir el-Balah. Additionally, a 13-year-old boy was wounded during an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank, further highlighting the widespread effects of the conflict on youth and civilians alike.
Islamic Relief notes the tactical use of the so-called “Yellow Line,” a demarcation used by Israel to exert military control, effectively displacing Palestinians and concentrating them into 35% of Gaza’s territory. This has significant implications for the nearly 2.1 million people living in dire conditions, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian situation.
Urgent Call for International Action
A representative from Islamic Relief in Gaza, who has chosen to remain anonymous for safety reasons, expressed profound concern: “There is no real ceasefire. They focus on displacement camps and densely populated areas, perpetuating an environment of fear.”
The charity emphasizes that essential resources, such as shelter materials, fuel, and medical supplies, remain blocked by Israel, crippling the already fragile infrastructure. With approximately 82% of Gaza’s buildings reported as damaged or destroyed, and over half of health services currently non-operational, the scale of the humanitarian crisis reaches alarming proportions. Moreover, more than 20,000 patients with severe medical conditions have been denied permission to seek urgent treatment outside Gaza.
In response to these dire circumstances, Islamic Relief is urging world leaders to take decisive action aimed at protecting civilians and enforcing international law. The organization asserts that a ceasefire that exists only on paper cannot justify inaction on the global stage. Now more than ever, the international community must come together to advocate for the rights and safety of those trapped in the ongoing conflict.
