Israel Maintains Strikes on Syria and Lebanon Amid US Efforts for Diplomatic Solutions | Israel Targeting Lebanon News

Israeli military operations have intensified, resulting in artillery strikes and ground incursions in southern Syria, alongside aerial bombardments and demolitions across southern Lebanon. These actions are occurring despite ongoing diplomatic endeavors aimed at curtailing hostilities.

Recent Israeli Military Actions in Syria

Israeli forces targeted a hilltop near Beit Jinn, situated in the western Damascus countryside, with artillery fire on Wednesday, as per eyewitness accounts. Reports from Syria’s Alikhbariah TV indicated that Israeli troops also conducted searches in Taranja, a village within the Quneitra region. This strategic location has been the site of frequent Israeli attacks over recent months, highlighting the ongoing tensions. Notable incidents include an Israeli drone strike on a vehicle in Beit Jinn and a previous ground raid that resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, including children.

The latest assaults came shortly after Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani engaged with Israeli intelligence representatives in Jordan, in talks facilitated by the United States. This meeting aimed to address the ongoing Israeli assaults and detention operations within Syrian territories. Since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israel has executed numerous strikes in Syria and has even stationed troops within a United Nations-mandated buffer zone that had historically separated Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights.

Escalation of Tensions

Recent military activities have further heightened tensions after Israel struck a Syrian airbase close to the Turkish border, alleging that Turkey was attempting to establish a military presence there. Both Turkey and Syria have denied these claims. Analyst Marwan Kabalan expressed skepticism regarding the potential for substantial outcomes from the ongoing discussions between Syria and Israel. He noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions seem aimed at consolidating support from right-wing constituents ahead of the upcoming general election in October.

In Lebanon, Israeli forces launched multiple airstrikes, targeting towns including al-Mansouri and Sarbine, while artillery fire hit Wadi Zibqin in the Tyre district. Israel has also continued to demolish properties across southern Lebanon. Reports indicate that large explosions were heard in several towns, and Israeli drones have been spotted flying over Beirut and its southern outskirts, further aggravating the situation.

The Impact on Lebanon and International Relations

These military operations persist despite a US-brokered agreement aimed at de-escalating hostilities, following a surge in violence in March, when Israel bombarded Lebanon in retaliation for renewed Hezbollah attacks. In response, Hezbollah has claimed their actions were reactions to the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, as well as ongoing Israeli violations of an earlier ceasefire.

The toll from the Israeli campaign has been devastating; Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported that since March 2, over 4,350 individuals have lost their lives, with more than 12,310 sustaining injuries. The relentless airstrikes have reignited discussions in Beirut about the framework agreement Lebanon signed with Israel in June, which calls for a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces in return for the disarmament of armed groups, specifically Hezbollah.

President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed his commitment to the negotiating process, stating that it remains the best option to spare Lebanon from further conflict, despite evident delays and obstacles. Political analyst Khaldoun Al-Sharif pointed out that Lebanon has upheld its obligations under the ceasefire agreement reached in 2024, which aimed to end hostilities ignited by Israel’s aggressive tactics in Gaza. Yet, he lamented that Israel continues its military operations and the demolition of homes in Lebanon without repercussions from the international community, particularly the United States, emphasizing that responsibility lies with Washington to encourage Israel to temper its military actions.
