Israel Strikes Lebanon, Resulting in Five Deaths Following Extended Ceasefire

The recent escalation of violence in southern and eastern Lebanon has claimed the lives of at least five individuals, with numerous others injured, according to the country’s Health Ministry. These Israeli airstrikes, which took place despite a purported ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, have intensified the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

Casualties and Attack Locations

On Sunday, Israeli airstrikes targeted various municipalities including Tayr Felsay, Tayr Debba, Az-Zrariyah, and Jebchit. In a separate incident, three more fatalities were reported in the village of Jouaiya resulting from a distinct Israeli attack. The violence not only has devastating human costs but has also prompted the Israeli military to issue forced displacement orders to residents in southern villages such as Sohmor, Roumine, al-Qusaibah, Kfar Hounah, and Naqoura.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Tyre, Obaida Hitto, described the situation as increasingly violent, contradicting the ceasefire’s intended purpose. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the ongoing military strategy, asserting that Israel is focused on territorial security while combating an enemy seeking tactical advantages. Since hostilities resumed on March 2, the toll has risen steeply; reports indicate nearly 2,988 fatalities and over 9,210 injuries from Israeli attacks across Lebanon.

The Ceasefire Agreement and Ongoing Talks

The air assaults occurred shortly after diplomatic discussions in Washington, where both nations tentatively agreed to extend a ceasefire for an additional 45 days. However, the original ceasefire, effective from April 17, has been largely disregarded. This meeting marked a notable diplomatic engagement, being the third round of talks between Lebanon and Israel, despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations.

The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) has suggested that the ceasefire extension is a strategic move aimed at laying the groundwork for a US-facilitated security track scheduled to start on May 29. Upcoming discussions are slated for June 2 and 3 in Washington, DC. Notably, Hezbollah has expressed its opposition to direct negotiations, especially amid ongoing hostilities from Israel.

The Humanitarian Impact and Economic Toll

The humanitarian crisis is worsening, with over 1.2 million people displaced between March and April, as reported by the Danish Refugee Council. The economic ramifications are severe; Bassem El-Bawab, head of the Lebanese Business Association, stated that Lebanon has incurred more than $25 billion in direct and indirect losses since the onset of Israeli hostilities in 2024. An estimated $12 billion is required for reconstruction, a figure that could escalate further if conflict persists.

Moreover, the Lebanese economy is losing approximately $30 million daily due to indirect damages, on top of the substantial direct destruction of infrastructure, homes, and businesses. These figures reflect an urgent need for comprehensive international support and a sustainable resolution to avert further humanitarian and economic collapse in Lebanon. As the situation develops, it remains crucial that the international community closely monitors the ongoing hostilities and seeks pathways for peace and reconstruction.
