When she returned after classes, it had been demolished by Israeli forces during a sweeping operation that destroyed homes, livestock shelters, and vital infrastructure. Sundus’ family home was more than mere bricks and mortar; it represented safety, familiarity, and comfort. The act of demolition in her village is not an isolated incident; rather, it underscores a pervasive threat that looms over many Palestinians living in Area C of the occupied West Bank. Israeli authorities often justify these demolitions by citing a lack of permits, a claim that many contend is unjust given the near-impossibility of obtaining such permissions for Palestinian homes. The educational institutions in Masafer Yatta face similar threats. Just recently, Israeli forces targeted the Shaab al-Butum school, demolishing parts essential for its operation. Established in 2015, this school caters to approximately 60 students from kindergarten through 11th grade. At Zif Secondary School for Girls, headteacher Hanaa al-Salameen reports that approximately 250 students attend. Yet, for many like 10th grader Rabiha Yousef Jibril, the school remains an irreplaceable space for dreams and aspirations, underscoring its role as “the only outlet” for personal growth and hope.

Proudly, students like Rabiha declare their commitment to education, asserting that they will pursue their studies no matter the obstacles. “Even if they demolish the school, we will continue to study,” she says, highlighting an unwavering determination to secure their future despite overwhelming adversity.
