US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee announced on Sunday that the United States is set to begin construction on a new permanent embassy complex in Jerusalem. This important step was revealed during a Sukkot reception for foreign diplomats hosted by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion at Safra Square.

Huckabee stated at the gathering, “We will soon be breaking ground on our property to begin the construction of the US embassy that will be our permanent home rather than being spread out all over the country.” This marks a significant commitment from the U.S. to establish a consolidated diplomatic presence in Israel’s capital.
On July 1, an agreement was signed between Israel and the United States designating the Allenby Compound in southern Jerusalem for this permanent embassy. Israel had previously approved this location in March. This development follows President Trump’s 2017 declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, which led to the opening of the U.S. Embassy in the city in 2018.
### Long-Term Commitment to Jerusalem
While Huckabee acknowledged that the construction process might take several years, he assured that the project represents a long-term commitment by the United States to Jerusalem. “It is our commitment as the United States of America and a partner of Israel to say that we are going to put a permanent imprint in this city,” Huckabee articulated.
During the reception, Lion highlighted the significance of the event. He welcomed the 46 invited ambassadors and emphasized the city’s openness and diversity, referring to the diplomats as “ushpizin,” the Hebrew term for guest during Sukkot. He articulated a vision for increasing the number of embassies in Jerusalem, currently numbering nine, with Colombia expected to be the tenth in due course.
