In the early hours of Tuesday, a disturbing clash erupted near the Palestinian village of Jalud in the West Bank. Over 100 extremist Jewish settlers confronted Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Border Police officers, attempting to obstruct the return of a Palestinian family to their home.
Violence and Vandalism Erupts
The settlers engaged in violent acts that included blocking roads, igniting tires, and throwing stones at the security personnel. Reports indicated that they also maliciously set fire to Palestinian-owned properties and vehicles. The IDF confirmed that three Border Police officers suffered light injuries during this turmoil, and a vehicle belonging to security forces was damaged in the chaos.
Judicial Impact on Resettlement Attempts
The planned return of the Palestinian family was rooted in a ruling by the High Court of Justice issued on September 6. This ruling mandated the Israeli government to allow three Palestinian families back to their homes in Jalud within 14 days. The court instructed the IDF and police to ensure their safety during the resettlement process and facilitate access to essential supplies for repairing utilities in the homes. However, the settlers’ violent actions thwarted this plan.
State Response and Ongoing Investigations
The High Court also sought explanations from the state regarding the failure to implement the order and the continued presence of barriers obstructing access to their homes. As tensions mounted, the IDF’s Central Command was criticized for inadequate preparations in the area preceding the clashes. An inquiry led by Central Command chief Major General Avi Bluth is expected, specifically examining the rise in nationalist crimes in the region.
Rising Tensions in the West Bank
The situation in the West Bank remains volatile, particularly amid heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. Authorities have expressed grave concerns over potential violence and terrorism. In response, the IDF has increased its presence in the Judea and Samaria Division, deploying around 25 battalions to maintain order.
