Residents Seek Refuge from the Heat as Israel Faces Intense Heatwave

As Israel braces for a significant surge in temperatures, the upcoming days promise to be exceptionally hot across the nation. With mercury levels projected to soar, residents are urged to take precautions to endure the extreme weather conditions expected this weekend.

Severe Heat Forecast for Israel

On Sunday, temperatures in Israel are anticipated to peak, particularly around the Sea of Galilee, where they could reach a sweltering 113°F (45°C). The Jordan Valley may experience even more intense heat, climbing to about 115.7°F (46.5°C). This region is notorious for its soaring summer temperatures, and this summer is no exception, with meteorologists warning of increasing heat stress that could affect residents and tourists alike.

Inland and mountainous areas will experience a hot and dry climate, contrasting with the coastal plains, which will feel significantly more humid. As the day progresses, heat stress is expected to intensify to heavy and even extreme levels nationwide. Gusty winds will begin to develop, particularly affecting mountainous and inland locations, providing a slight relief from the oppressive conditions but also potentially complicating the situation.

Record-Breaking Temperatures

Saturday marked the beginning of this heatwave, with temperatures already soaring to 104°F (40°C). Notably, Gilgal in the Jordan Valley recorded the highest temperature of the day at an astounding 113.4°F (45.2°C). Other locales like Capernaum and Beth She’an also reached extreme highs of 110.3°F (43.5°C). In contrast, the Old City of Jerusalem suffered through a stifling 97°F (36.1°C), while surrounding foothills recorded temperatures hitting 104°F (40°C).

For those in coastal regions, the situation was slightly more bearable, with temperatures hovering around 86°F (30°C). However, humidity levels reached a staggering 75%, making conditions feel much worse and leading to uncomfortable heat stress for individuals in those areas.

Looking Ahead: Slight Relief Coming

As the week progresses, a slight cooling trend is anticipated, particularly on Monday when temperatures in mountainous and inland areas will ease a bit. Nonetheless, high temperatures will persist in these regions, and humidity levels along the coast will continue to challenge residents. While heat stress may diminish slightly, it will still linger at heavy to extreme levels across the country.

By Tuesday morning, forecasts indicate partly cloudy to clear skies with a further reduction in temperatures, especially inland and in the mountains. Conditions will stabilize even more by Wednesday, as any morning clouds dissipate and allow for fair weather. Overall, temperatures are set to return to seasonal norms in the mountainous regions, although coastal areas will likely continue to endure humid conditions.

As this heatwave unfolds, it’s crucial for Israelis and visitors alike to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak hours, and remain vigilant against heat-related illnesses.
