Ramat HaNegev, Israel’s largest regional council, encompasses various communities, including kibbutzim and farms, housing approximately 10,500 residents. These areas span a significant portion of Israel’s land, representing 22% of its total territory. Despite its vastness, the Negev region, particularly the remote Nitzana area near the Egyptian border, remains largely uninhabited.

Not many residents opt for life in the Negev’s isolated highlands. The Nitzana region specifically comprises five small agricultural communities, one being Kadesh Barnea, situated just 300 meters from the border with Egypt. The remoteness of these areas is often a deterrent for potential residents; however, a few have chosen to make this locale their home.
One such individual is Noam Efrat, who returned to Kadesh Barnea to start a family. Currently, he runs his family’s cherry tomato farm, growing the vibrant and sweet tomatoes that are highly sought after in upscale shops in Tel Aviv.
### Embracing the Desert Life
Noam and his wife Noa, along with their young son Negev, enjoy the tranquility of Kadesh Barnea, a moshav accommodating around 87 families. The couple relocated here from Metula in 2022, cherishing the peaceful desert environment. Reflecting on his youth, Noam admits he once dreamed of escaping this region. After a stint in urban settings, he realized the value of returning to his roots and the opportunities that come with rural living.
Efrat’s daily schedule showcases the practical advantages of farming in Kadesh Barnea. He rises at 5:30 a.m., works uninterrupted for a few hours, and returns home in time to take his son to daycare, making the most of the natural daylight for farming activities.
### Agricultural Innovation in the Negev
Since his parents settled in this arid region in 1995, agricultural ventures have evolved. Initially, it was all about cherry tomatoes, but local farmers soon diversified into cucumbers, wine grapes, and other crops. The innovation extends to understanding the unique aspects of farming in the desert environment, where the combination of geothermal and desalinated water has proven beneficial for crop growth. Remarkably, the salinity of local water sources contributes to the sweetness of cherry tomatoes in this region.
As a local farmer, Noam’s knowledge of agriculture intersecting with the history of Nitzana has prompted him to participate in archiving the region’s development. His project, Gesher L’Dorot (A Bridge for Generations), works towards digitizing the history and stories of the region through interviews and multimedia, preserving the legacy of those who first cultivated these communities.
### Challenges and Resilience
Despite the beauty of the Negev landscape, challenges persist for its residents. The remote location can result in limited access to healthcare and other services. For instance, Noam’s son Negev required specialized medical care, which necessitated a journey to Jerusalem for surgery. The distances involved can be daunting, drawing attention to the often-overlooked difficulties faced by those living in the Negev.
Nevertheless, Noam and Noa remain committed to raising their son in Kadesh Barnea, finding joy in the closeness of family and the unique lifestyle this region offers. Their gratitude for the tranquil environment and supportive community underscores the positive aspects of life in the desert.
