Two recent Israeli assaults in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of two Palestinians and numerous injuries, coinciding with a wave of violence against Palestinian properties and homes in both the northern and southern regions of the occupied West Bank. These events unfolded on Saturday, the fourth day of the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha, amidst ongoing Israeli breaches of a U.S.-endorsed ceasefire established in October to halt the ongoing violence against Gaza.
Casualties in Gaza
Dr. Jamal Abu Aoun, who led the anesthesia department at Al-Yafa Medical Hospital in Deir al-Balah, lost his life due to an Israeli airstrike near the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the same region. Medical sources reported that Dr. Abu Aoun’s body, along with three injured individuals—including a child—was brought to the hospital following a drone attack targeting civilians. Furthermore, earlier that day, Israeli artillery shells struck areas in and around Khan Younis, and the al-Bureij refugee camp was also affected by artillery fire.
Later reports indicated more fatalities; another Palestinian was killed, and several others suffered injuries from a drone strike near Firas Market, one of Gaza City’s bustling commercial hubs. In a move that escalates the destruction, Israeli forces were reported to have demolished homes east of Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, deepening the devastation experienced in residential areas across the region.
The Gaza Media Office cited alarming statistics, reporting at least 922 Palestinian deaths and 2,786 injuries resulting from Israeli actions since the proclaimed ceasefire in October. Overall, the ongoing conflict, which escalated in October 2023, has reportedly claimed over 72,000 Palestinian lives and left more than 172,000 injured, according to sources from Palestine.
Israeli Military Conduct
Testimonies from Israeli soldiers shared with The Associated Press reveal a troubling environment characterized by dehumanization and loose rules of engagement during the ceasefire period. Reservists who served in the area between October and January disclosed that soldiers frequently fired upon Palestinians near the poorly defined “Yellow Line,” purportedly separating Israeli-controlled territory from the rest of Gaza.
One soldier recounted a chilling experience where his unit celebrated the deaths of all occupants in a vehicle targeted by a strike. Another described the prevailing attitude among commanders, emphasizing territorial control over human life. These accounts highlight the grim reality faced during the so-called ceasefire, raising serious questions about the ethical conduct of military operations in the region.
Settler Violence in the West Bank
In parallel with the actions in Gaza, Israeli settlers committed violent acts against Palestinian homes early on Saturday in Beita, south of Nablus. Reports indicated that settlers hurled stones at residences and damaged several vehicles. Furthermore, light bombs were reportedly fired by Israeli forces into the town’s skyline.
In the southern region of the West Bank, assaults extended to agricultural lands, where settlers targeted Palestinian farms and destroyed several trees. An activist monitoring these violations in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, recounted the extent of damage inflicted upon local farms and properties. A report by the Palestinian state-run Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission noted that Israeli settlers carried out approximately 540 attacks in April alone, involving a wide range of violent activities from physical assaults to the destruction of agricultural resources and property.
Since the initiation of the current conflict in Gaza, violence against Palestinians has surged in the West Bank. In stark statistics, Palestinian sources report that Israeli forces and settlers have claimed 1,168 lives, injured over 12,600 individuals, displaced around 33,000 people, and detained nearly 23,000 others since October 2023.
