Ceylon Tea Celebration in Qatar

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha recently hosted a special event to honor both the rich heritage of Ceylon Tea and the enduring diplomatic relationship between Qatar and Sri Lanka. The “Flavours from Sri Lanka” tea tasting experience was a noteworthy gathering, symbolizing 159 years of Ceylon Tea history and half a century of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

A Cultural Gathering

Held at the Cultural Village Foundation – Katara and in collaboration with the Qatar–Sri Lanka Business Council, the event attracted dignitaries, including Sri Lankan Ambassador to Qatar H E Sithra Khan Azard and Professor Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, the Director General of Katara Cultural Village. Guests included members of the diplomatic community and enthusiasts of Sri Lankan culture, all coming together to celebrate the occasion.

During her speech, Ambassador Azard noted that Ceylon Tea serves as a testament to the resilience and innovation of Sri Lanka. Highlighting the contributions of generations from the pioneering efforts of James Taylor in 1867, she emphasized the importance of maintaining the industry’s reputation for quality across the globe.

Strengthening Diplomatic Relations

Reflecting on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Sri Lanka, the ambassador emphasized the lasting bonds formed over the years. “Fifty years ago, our two countries established diplomatic relations, laying the groundwork for a partnership that has continually strengthened,” she stated. This relationship has evolved to encompass various sectors, including trade, tourism, aviation, and culture, grounded in mutual respect and trust.

The ambassador also pointed out the essential role played by personal connections. “Our cooperation has deepened, enriched by the strong ties that exist between our people,” she added. Celebrating this milestone, she expressed optimism for the future of Qatari-Sri Lankan relations.

Bringing People Together

The shared love for tea is central to understanding the human connections that bridge the two nations. Ambassador Azard noted, “Tea has always acted as a catalyst for dialogue and understanding. It brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering moments of conversation and friendship.” In many ways, this enduring beverage epitomizes the spirit of the relationship between Sri Lanka and Qatar.

The event also featured a documentary tracing the historical journey of Ceylon Tea from its inception in the 19th century, which highlighted the significant milestones that contributed to its international acclaim as well as its cultural and economic impact in Sri Lanka.

Attendees enjoyed a delightful tasting experience that showcased premium Ceylon Tea sourced from various regions of Sri Lanka. The event included an array of traditional dishes and sweets, creating an inviting atmosphere that captured the essence of the deep-rooted cultural ties between Qatar and Sri Lanka.

As guests sipped on fine Ceylon Tea, they participated in an enriching experience that not only honored a beverage with profound significance but also celebrated the diplomatic relations that have flourished between the two nations for fifty years.
