With the ongoing US-Israel conflict and its implications for the upcoming season, F1 has set a mid-September deadline to assess whether the final races in the Middle East—specifically, Qatar and Abu Dhabi—can proceed as planned. If these races cannot be held, the season may conclude in Europe.
Decision Timeline and Current Situation
Stefano Domenicali, the Chief Executive of Formula One, emphasized the importance of monitoring the evolving situation in the Middle East before making any final decisions. “We will take the maximum time for us to see how the situation will develop and we will take the decision at the right time,” he explained to reporters. As it stands, races scheduled earlier in the season, including those in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, were canceled due to the ongoing conflict. The Sepang Circuit in Malaysia has stepped in to host one of those canceled events on October 4, with considerable financial backing from Saudi Arabia.
Domenicali confirmed that the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races remain tentatively scheduled for November 29 and December 6, respectively, and both venues are already sold out. However, he indicated that if the geopolitical climate does not improve, the season’s conclusion will move to Europe, as other alternatives would not be viable.
Potential Alternatives and Candidates
In light of potential disruptions, Domenicali also mentioned that contingency plans are in place. The Italian Imola circuit has emerged as a possible substitute venue for the final races. Historically significant for teams like Ferrari and a regular fixture in the racing calendar, Imola presents both challenges and opportunities given the time of year. “Informed sources have identified Imola as a top candidate, despite potential weather issues at that point in the season,” Domenicali noted.
