Fares to spearhead Qatar’s weightlifting efforts at the Asian Games

Qatar is gearing up for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with weightlifting at the forefront of its aspirations. The nation’s hopes largely rest on the shoulders of Fares Ibrahim, the reigning Olympic champion, alongside rising star Ouisal Ikhlef. The Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, offer a chance for both lifters to restore Qatar’s reputation in a sport where it has previously achieved notable success.

Fares Ibrahim: Leading the Charge for Qatar

Fares Ibrahim, who etched his name in sports history with an Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Games, is set to be a pivotal figure in Qatar’s weightlifting ambitions at the Asian Games. A seasoned competitor, Ibrahim’s experience on the global stage provides him with both a strategic advantage and the weight of national expectations. The disappointment of not securing a medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games has only intensified his drive to make a significant impact in Japan.

The Rise of Ouisal Ikhlef

Joining Fares in this quest is Ouisal Ikhlef, an emerging talent in the weightlifting arena. Her recent performances have garnered attention, and she has shown significant improvement over past competitions. Ikhlef aims to make a name for herself and solidify her status as one of Qatar’s promising athletes. Her tenacity and skill suggest that she could contribute to the nation’s success in Aichi-Nagoya.

Ikhlef’s recent participation at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Gandhinagar, India, showcased her potential. Competing in the competitive 86kg+ category, she not only claimed two silver medals in Clean & Jerk and Total but also secured a bronze for her Snatch performance. Notably, she outperformed South Korea’s world No. 2-ranked Park Hye-jeong, which underscores her capabilities and determination.

A Rich Legacy in Asian Weightlifting

Qatar has a storied history in weightlifting at the Asian Games, having previously secured three medals: one gold and two silver. The journey began at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, when Asaad Saeed Saif earned gold in the 105kg category. His impressive total lift of 417.5 kg, comprising 192.5 kg in Snatch and 225 kg in Clean and Jerk, heralded Qatar’s arrival as a formidable force in Asian weightlifting.

In 2006, Jaber Saeed Salem continued the legacy with a silver medal at the Doha Asian Games. Competing in the over-105kg category, his combined lift of 410kg placed him second, showcasing the competitive spirit and skill that define Qatari weightlifting. Most recently, Fares Ibrahim captured silver at the Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Games, where his total lift of 381 kg reinforced Qatar’s presence on the podium.

Looking Ahead to Aichi-Nagoya 2026

As the Asian Games approach, both Fares Ibrahim and Ouisal Ikhlef are poised to make their mark on this prestigious stage. With the momentum of past achievements and the aspiration to overcome the setbacks of recent competitions, the duo symbolizes Qatar’s future in weightlifting. The Aichi-Nagoya Games represent not just a chance for individual glory but also an opportunity for Qatar to reclaim its stature among Asia’s weightlifting elite.
