HMC Initiates Human Tissue Biobank in Partnership with Qatar Precision Health Institute

Doha, Qatar: The Hamad Medical Corporation’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) has unveiled its Human Tissue Biobank, developed in partnership with the Qatar Precision Health Institute (QPHI). This initiative aims to enhance the Biobank’s functionalities and extend its services to include the management of freshly removed biological tissues, thereby bolstering both clinical practices and biomedical research.

Expansion of the Human Tissue Biobank

Building on the initial phase of the Human Tissue Biobank, which successfully established regulatory and operational frameworks, this new phase will allow for the efficient management of tissue samples in alignment with high-quality governance standards. The first phase already laid a solid foundation, with the Biobank currently housing approximately 700,000 paraffin blocks and 2.6 million tissue slides. This includes around 250,000 immunohistochemistry slides, and the Biobank has actively supported 58 research applications during its initial operation.

Dr. Einas Al Kuwari, Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, highlighted this progress: “Since the launch of our initial biobank phase, we’ve concentrated on creating a comprehensive system for storing and managing formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. This has resulted in significant advancements, and we are now gearing up for a more sophisticated second phase, which will allow for the storage and management of newly resected biological tissues.”

Benefits of Freshly Resected Tissue Storage

This new phase introduces enhanced capabilities that facilitate the handling of freshly resected biological tissues, creating organized pathways for both clinical and research utilization while maintaining stringent ethical guidelines and regulatory compliance. Regarding the clinical pathway, Dr. Al Kuwari explained that the Biobank will now enable secure storage of freshly obtained tissues based on clinical requirements, which will subsequently support advanced molecular and genomic assessments. This includes next-generation sequencing, precision oncology initiatives, and advanced cellular and tissue diagnostics.

The introduction of these services is set to refine treatment decision-making processes, widen access to cutting-edge molecular diagnostics, and better align with the evolving landscape of personalized healthcare and precision medicine. Such advancements are crucial in providing patients with tailored therapeutic options that meet their specific health needs.

Commitment to Ethical Standards in Research

On the research front, the upgraded Biobank aims to offer a robust national platform for storing specimens exclusively for approved studies. As always, all research initiatives will be subjected to ethical and regulatory evaluations managed by the Medical Research Center in accordance with established policies at HMC. The Human Tissue Biobank is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards, ensuring informed consent, data privacy, and specimen integrity.

The transition into this new phase underscores the productive partnership between HMC and QPHI, aimed at fortifying Qatar’s national framework for precision medicine and biomedical research. By expanding the Biobank’s capabilities, this initiative is anticipated to propel the advancement of modern diagnostic technologies, broaden the scope of translational research, and hasten the implementation of precision medicine solutions.

Overall, the enhancements to the Human Tissue Biobank are designed to meet present and future healthcare demands, significantly elevating Qatar’s status in the realms of biomedical research and personalized healthcare.
