Hoengseong Hanwoo’s Entrance into Qatar’s Premium Meat Market

Hoengseong Hanwoo, a distinguished South Korean beef brand, is making waves in Qatar as it officially enters the local market. This marks a significant milestone, as it becomes Hoengseong’s third halal export territory, following successful launches in Malaysia and the UAE. The entry is poised to enhance the brand’s foothold in the Middle East’s premium meat sector, aligning perfectly with the region’s increasing demand for high-quality beef.

Celebrating a Landmark Event in Doha

On the 18th of October, South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, in collaboration with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), Hoengseong County, and the South Korean Embassy in Qatar, organized a special event in Doha to commemorate this milestone. The ceremony took place at The Meat Market, a prominent Qatari importer, and was attended by around 30 officials, including South Korea’s Ambassador to Qatar, Hong Ji-pyo, and representatives from Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health. The focus was on the robust quality control measures surrounding Hoengseong Hanwoo, showcasing its traceability and halal slaughter practices.

The inaugural shipment, weighing 80.8 kg, arrived in Qatar by air on October 13. Hoengseong Hanwoo originates from South Korea’s sole halal-certified slaughterhouse and has received endorsements from both the Korea Muslim Federation and a recognized Japanese halal certifying body. As Qatar relies heavily on imports for over 80% of its red meat supply, the presence of high-quality options like Hanwoo can potentially transform consumer choices within this lucrative market.

Growing Demand for High-Quality Beef in Qatar

Qatar’s beef import expenditures have seen an impressive surge, nearly doubling from $97 million in 2019 to an anticipated $180 million by 2024. This increase is largely driven by affluent consumers, with a per capita income of around $70,000, coupled with a vibrant hotel and dining scene that prioritizes premium products. In light of these trends, Hoengseong Hanwoo stands to capture the interest of local consumers eager for superior quality beef.

The journey toward this accomplishment was not without its challenges. Initially planned for March this year, a significant event featuring Hoengseong Hanwoo was abruptly canceled due to geopolitical tensions. Despite such setbacks, a subsequent cooperation agreement was signed with The Meat Market, allowing for a quicker market entry once import logistics were finalized.

Navigating Qatar’s Strict Import Regulations

One of the most formidable obstacles faced was Qatar’s stringent import regulations, particularly concerning foot-and-mouth disease vaccination protocols. After persistent negotiations involving the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture, KOTRA, and Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health, South Korea was finally added to the list of countries authorized to export chilled and frozen boneless beef in August. Following the successful completion of required procedures, the initial shipment was dispatched, paving the way for future entries into the Qatari market.

To keep the momentum going, KOTRA and South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture are organizing the “Korean Shopping Festival 2026,” across major Qatari retail chains, including Carrefour and Monoprix. This initiative, along with ongoing promotional campaigns, aims to establish Hoengseong Hanwoo as not just any beef, but as a premium South Korean product, expanding the overall market for Korean cuisine in the region.

In conclusion, the successful entry of Hoengseong Hanwoo into Qatar signifies a landmark achievement for South Korean beef exports in the Middle East. This accomplishment demonstrates resilience in overcoming barriers and sets a precedent for other agricultural products aspiring to tap into halal markets. With continued support and strategic marketing, Hoengseong is positioned to solidify its place in the Middle Eastern premium meat sector.
