The launch event, held in Doha, underscored the journey from handwritten calendars to a comprehensive digital platform. Attendees included prominent figures such as Dr. Hamad Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, the Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library, and other esteemed representatives from the GCC. Their presence highlighted the importance of this occasion, reflecting on the contributions of past leaders in the educational and cultural spheres.
Dr. Ibrahim bin Abdullah Al Ansari, Vice Chairman of Al Ansari Complex, emphasized how the Qatar Calendar House has historically integrated astronomy into daily life from a legal and religious perspective. He traced its evolution beginning with the late Judge Sheikh Ibrahim bin Abdullah Al Ansari and his son, Sheikh Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al Ansari, who laid the groundwork for these astronomical developments. Today, the Qatar Calendar House stands as a respected nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting this rich legacy.
The Gulf Calendar App: A Digital Transformation
The launch of the Gulf Calendar app represents an impressive evolution over the years, transitioning from the limited scope of handwritten calendars to robust digital formats. Initially serving a few hundred users, the Qatari Calendar app has successfully reached over 160,000 active users. The Gulf Calendar now extends this service to cover nearly 50 cities throughout the GCC, incorporating various features such as prayer times, astronomical information, and Ramadan schedules.
In his remarks, Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari paid tribute to Sheikh Abdullah Al Ansari, highlighting his significant educational contributions. He detailed how Sheikh Al Ansari, born in 1914, not only memorized the Quran at a tender age but also championed female education by founding Qatar’s first girls’ school in 1955. His efforts led to the establishment of a public library and numerous mosques, enriching the cultural landscape of the region.

The application includes both Hijri and Gregorian dates, customizable prayer times, and vital astronomical data, making it a comprehensive tool for users in the Gulf region.
The event culminated with the distribution of commemorative replicas of the original 1951 Qatari Calendar along with a documentary documenting the life and contributions of Sheikh Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al Ansari. This honored yet another chapter in the legacy of the Qatar Calendar House, symbolizing a commitment to education, culture, and the merging of tradition with technological advancement.
