Qatar introduces trading platform to enhance its position in the worldwide diamond market.

Qatar has recently unveiled the Qatar Diamond Exchange (QDE), a significant new platform dedicated to the trading of both rough and polished diamonds. This marketplace aims to bridge Doha with global trading networks, fostering international connections in the diamond sector.

Qatar Diamond Exchange: A Regulated Ecosystem

Situated in the Ras Bufontas Free Zone, the QDE integrates a variety of essential services, including trading, certification, vaulting, customs procedures, and industry assistance, into a single regulated ecosystem. This initiative marks a crucial advancement in Qatar’s strategy to diversify its economy and establish itself as a reliable player in the global diamond market. As Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Faisal Al-Thani, CEO of the Qatar Free Zones Authority and chairman of QDE, expressed, the exchange consolidates the entire value chain of diamonds and precious stones, streamlining processes from trading and storage to auctions and tenders within a regulated environment.

Commitment to Ethical Standards

The establishment of the QDE aligns with Qatar’s commitment to ethical sourcing through its participation in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. This international initiative ensures that rough diamonds traded are conflict-free. Following the introduction of legislation in 2025, Qatar’s free zones now serve as the only authorized points for the entry and exit of rough diamonds in the country, with the Qatar Free Zones Authority designated as the overseeing body. The QDE provides a controlled platform for members to engage in trading, storing, and certifying diamonds while adhering to this framework.

Inviting Global Participation

Membership at the QDE is open to diamond traders, manufacturers, cutters, polishers, and various service providers within the industry. Companies that engage with the exchange can benefit from a range of opportunities, including trading licenses, secure vaulting facilities, valuation services, and specialized insurance. Additionally, businesses operating in this free zone can take advantage of significant incentives, such as complete foreign ownership and zero corporate tax for qualifying enterprises.

Connecting Buyers and Sellers

The QDE is poised to organize frequent tenders that facilitate connections between diamond producers in Africa and Asia with prospective buyers across Europe and the Gulf region. With this goal, the exchange aims to create a vibrant marketplace where suppliers and buyers can mutually benefit from their interaction, enhancing global diamond trade dynamics. Through the QDE, Qatar seeks not only to establish itself as a trading hub but also to foster transparency and trust in the diamond supply chain.

In essence, the Qatar Diamond Exchange represents a strategic move that not only enhances Qatar’s economic landscape but also positions the nation as a responsible and influential player in the global diamond market. By creating a well-regulated and comprehensive platform, Qatar aims to attract global industry participants, promote ethical trading practices, and innovate the way diamonds are exchanged.
