Doha to Host a New Landmark for Contemporary Art
In an exciting development for the art landscape in Qatar, H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Chairperson of Qatar Museums, has unveiled plans for the Doha Pavilion: Gerhard Richter. This ambitious project was announced during a special roundtable session at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Germany. The structure is set to be a unique, site-specific addition to the Doha skyline and is a significant endorsement of Qatar’s growing commitment to arts and culture.
The Vision Behind Doha Pavilion
The Doha Pavilion, designed by the acclaimed artist Gerhard Richter, will serve as both a standalone artwork and a functional space for exhibition. Collaborating closely with Selldorf Architects, Richter aims to create a free-standing structure that will house a dedicated collection of his paintings and sculptures. During the announcement, Sheikha Al Mayassa joined Annabelle Selldorf, the Principal of Selldorf Architects, and Tom Eccles, Qatar Museums’ Public Art Advisor and Rubaiya Qatar’s Co-Curator, for an insightful discussion on the project.
