The State of Qatar has reiterated its dedication to upholding principles of equality, peaceful coexistence, and respect for cultural diversity, deeply embedded in both Qatari and Islamic traditions. The nation also emphasized its commitment to adhering to international human rights standards, advocating for the self-determination of all peoples.

Commitment to Human Rights at the United Nations

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Qatar’s Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the UN, Amna Abdullah Salat, delivered key statements focusing on the elimination of racism and the right to self-determination. She highlighted the importance of Qatar’s Permanent Constitution, which enshrines fundamental values such as justice, equality, and freedom. Article 18 emphasizes that society is based on essential pillars, while Article 35 ensures that all individuals are equal before the law, prohibiting discrimination based on sex, race, language, or religion.

Since joining the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in 1976, Qatar has remained steadfast in fulfilling its international obligations regarding human rights. Qatar continues its collaboration with the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), which last reviewed the nation’s periodic report in 2024, demonstrating a proactive approach toward addressing these critical issues.

Promoting Dialogue and Understanding

Qatar National Vision 2030 prioritizes fostering dialogue among different cultures and religions. This commitment is reflected in the country’s various initiatives aimed at promoting understanding and building bridges among diverse communities. The National Human Rights Committee plays a pivotal role in safeguarding social justice, encouraging equality, and advancing non-discrimination. Additionally, the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue contributes significantly to strengthening values of tolerance and mutual respect among different faiths.

In her address, Salat referenced the UN Secretary-General’s report on self-determination emphasizing the undeniable rights of the Palestinian people, including their aspiration for an independent state. The humanitarian challenges in the Gaza Strip were also underscored, with the report pointing out that denying any population their basic means of subsistence undermines their ability to exercise self-determination.

Qatar’s Position on Palestine

Salat reiterated Qatar’s unwavering stance that peace and stability are crucial for comprehensive development. She emphasized the need for adhering to international resolutions that endorse the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state based on borders defined in 1967, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital. Qatar calls for an immediate end to the occupation, settlement activities, and unlawful practices in the region.

Furthermore, Qatar remains dedicated to combating all forms of racism, discrimination, and xenophobia while promoting tolerance and diverse cultural values. The country firmly supports the right to self-determination for all peoples, particularly the Palestinian people, aligning its stance with the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter and international law.

Through its commitments and initiatives, Qatar aims to foster an environment of equality and respect for human rights both within its borders and on the international stage. As the nation continues to advocate for these core principles, its efforts are aimed at contributing toward global peace and cooperation.
