Qatar to Invest in Solar Energy Plant in Lebanon — Al Jazeera

Qatar has unveiled plans to establish a significant solar power facility in Lebanon, aimed at alleviating the nation’s ongoing energy crisis. This announcement was made by Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani during his visit to Beirut, where he met with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

Collaboration Between Qatar and TotalEnergies

As reported by various news outlets, QatarEnergy has partnered with the French energy company TotalEnergies to jointly execute this solar project. The agreement encompasses a comprehensive framework intended to enhance cooperation within the energy sector. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the necessity for both parties to devise sustainable solutions to address Lebanon’s energy challenges. This collaboration signifies a vital step toward improving Lebanon’s renewable energy capacity and reducing its dependency on traditional energy sources.

Financial Support for Lebanon’s Energy Sector

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed that he would soon outline detailed plans for the electricity sector in Lebanon. Notably, the financing, implementation, and initiation of the solar project are expected to be entirely covered by the Qatari side, placing no financial burden on the Lebanese state. This initiative is particularly crucial, given that Lebanon’s state-run electricity provider has accumulated substantial public debt, with losses estimated at around $40 billion over the years. Currently, the company struggles with an outdated infrastructure that restricts electricity supply to just a few hours each day.

Addressing Regional Security Concerns

During his visit, Sheikh Mohammed also took the opportunity to engage with Lebanon’s president and parliamentary speaker, discussing various urgent issues affecting the region. A significant portion of these discussions revolved around Israeli violations within Lebanese territory and the ongoing situation in the southern regions of the country. The Qatari Prime Minister urged Israel to withdraw its military presence from Lebanon and cease its incursions.

He further indicated that Qatar is collaborating with the United States in preparation for the future reconstruction of southern Lebanon. This initiative aims to facilitate the return of displaced individuals to their homes. According to Lebanese authorities, over 4,300 lives have been lost due to Israeli assaults since March, while the International Organization for Migration reports that more than 300,000 people remain displaced following a ceasefire in June.

Qatar’s commitment to helping Lebanon via renewable energy demonstrates not only a commitment to enhancing the country’s energy resiliency but also its intention to engage in the broader geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. The solar power plant initiative is thus a multifaceted approach, aligning humanitarian assistance with regional diplomacy.
