Qatar urges advancement in efforts to eradicate remaining chemical weapons in Syria.

The recent advancements in dismantling the remnants of Syria’s chemical weapons program have been recognized as a significant achievement by the State of Qatar. This progress highlights the role of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the essential nature of international cooperation in resolving complex global issues.

Qatar’s Affirmation at the OPCW Session

During the 113th Session of the OPCW Executive Council in The Hague, Qatar’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, HE Dr. Mutlaq bin Majed Al Qahtani, highlighted the milestone reached in eliminating Syria’s outdated chemical weapons. Speaking under the agenda item focused on the remnants of the prior regime’s chemical armaments, Ambassador Al Qahtani emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts by various nations in achieving tangible outcomes. This event marked a purposeful step forward in the concerted effort against chemical weapons and the responsibilities of member states under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Collaborative Efforts Leading to Progress

Since taking on the role of representing the Syrian Arab Republic at the OPCW, Qatar has worked closely with supportive nations to create an environment conducive to Syria regaining its rights and privileges in the international arena. Ambassador Al Qahtani noted that this teamwork has resulted in substantial progress, helping the Syrian government and the OPCW’s Technical Secretariat to advance the dismantling of hazardous materials. Strengthening channels of communication, coordinating the transfer of critical information and documentation, and backing verification activities have all contributed to this breakthrough.

A Clear Path Forward

In his address, HE Majed Al Qahtani urged the need for a well-defined and practical roadmap. He called for enhancements in coordination between the Technical Secretariat and the Syrian government, focusing on establishing specific timelines, phased implementation, and prioritized tasks to ensure the complete and verifiable elimination of the chemical weapons remnants. Such a roadmap is essential for achieving a final resolution in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention and the OPCW’s directives.

Supporting Responsibilities Under the Chemical Weapons Convention

Al Qahtani also urged member states to continue their support for the Syrian government as it fulfills its responsibilities under the Chemical Weapons Convention. This ongoing assistance is crucial in preventing the proliferation of chemical weapons, ensuring that the Technical Secretariat can effectively carry out its vital work. The international community’s continued commitment to supporting these goals will not only help resolve the Syrian situation but also contribute to global peace and security.

By committing to these collaborative efforts and maintaining focus on essential objectives, Qatar and its allies are paving the way for long-term solutions. Emphasizing the importance of solidarity among nations showcases how effective multilateral partnerships can lead to positive outcomes, ultimately moving toward a world free of chemical weapons.
