QCS Introduces ‘It’s Time’ Campaign to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has unveiled the “It’s Time” campaign in alignment with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which occurs each October. This initiative is part of QCS’s ongoing endeavor to heighten awareness, advocate for early detection, and promote healthy lifestyle choices designed to mitigate breast cancer risk factors.

Community Engagement and Support

The “It’s Time” campaign is a comprehensive endeavor aimed at reaching all demographics within Qatar. Its primary goal is to motivate women to prioritize their health by scheduling necessary screenings. The campaign also emphasizes the significance of psychological and community support for those battling breast cancer. By creating an inclusive environment that encourages open dialogue, QCS aims to foster a network of support for women coping with this challenging diagnosis.

Collaboration and Outreach

Qatar National Bank (QNB) stands as the official sponsor of the “It’s Time” campaign, which enhances QCS’s mission to elevate health awareness surrounding breast cancer. The initiative boasts an extensive outreach strategy that encompasses outdoor advertising, digital screens in prominent shopping areas, and a broad array of activities on both traditional and digital media platforms. Workshops and lectures tailored for various community segments, including schools and universities, will also be offered, enhancing the educational aspect of the campaign.

In addition, a specialized workshop will cater to breast cancer survivors, creating a space for media professionals, survivors, and community advocates to come together. This event will focus on sharing messages of hope and emphasizing the critical role of community support throughout the cancer journey.

Crucial Health Messages

Mona Ashkanani, General Manager of Qatar Cancer Society, remarked on the campaign’s objectives, stating, “This year, we designed ‘It’s Time’ as a communal initiative aimed at every corner of Qatar. Awareness about breast cancer is a collective obligation, and conveying a clear message about early detection can significantly impact women’s health.” Her message is clear: women should prioritize their health, partake in screenings, and support those affected by or surviving breast cancer.

The importance of sustained awareness is further underscored by recent statistics from the Qatar National Cancer Registry under the Ministry of Public Health. In 2023, there were 562 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in women across Qatar. Notably, non-Qatari women constituted 71% of these cases, while Qatari women represented 29%. The age group most affected was women aged 45 to 49, which highlights the need for targeted awareness efforts.

Moreover, Ashkanani emphasized the necessity of dispelling prevalent myths that may deter women from seeking timely screenings or medical consultation. Misconceptions, such as the belief that all breast lumps indicate cancer, that mammograms can induce cancer, or that biopsies might spread the disease, must be addressed to ensure that women are guided by accurate information rather than fear.

By continuing to amplify awareness, the “It’s Time” campaign serves to remind women of the importance of early detection and the value of community in the journey of overcoming breast cancer. Through education, support, and compelling messaging, QCS is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of women throughout Qatar.
