Beyond LIV, Saudi Arabia Turns to Korea for Golf Expansion

Saudi Arabia is making strides to enhance its golfing scene, drawing inspiration from established markets like South Korea. With global attention brought by LIV Golf and its high-profile player acquisitions, the kingdom is focused on an internal challenge: increasing domestic participation in the sport.

Exploring the Potential of Golf in Saudi Arabia

Thomas Rudy, the chief investment and supply officer at Golf Saudi, is leveraging South Korea’s extensive golf course infrastructure and innovative technology to serve as a blueprint for increasing Saudi Arabia’s golfing community. With fewer than 5,000 registered golfers in the kingdom, Rudy sees significant room for growth and aims to raise the number of regular players to between 30,000 and 50,000 within five years. He emphasizes that South Korea’s golf market, which boasts approximately 600 courses, has managed to create a mature golfing environment with about 10 to 11 courses per million residents. In contrast, Saudi Arabia is just beginning its journey with a mere 0.3 courses per million residents.

Seeking Innovative Partnerships

Backed by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund, Golf Saudi is actively searching for Korean partnerships that encompass course development, technological advancements, and entertainment modalities surrounding the sport. The organization is keen not just on traditional golf course operators but also on real estate developers and tech companies that can contribute new and engaging ways to enjoy golf.

Rudy highlights the importance of technology in this endeavor, inviting Korean firms to present their innovations. One notable collaboration already in motion includes the distribution of Golfzon simulators, which have gained substantial traction in Saudi Arabia, accounting for a significant portion of the equipment in local venues.

Golf Saudi seeks to remove barriers that might discourage newcomers from playing, and one of the initiatives aimed at this goal is the “Go Golf” program. This free 10-week course provides 12 lessons and is supported by golf academies and driving ranges designed to enhance the golfing experience.

Entertainment and Accessibility as Key Components

One of the highlights of Golf Saudi’s strategy includes the upcoming introduction of the first Topgolf venue in Riyadh, which is expected to draw over 300,000 visitors each year. This entertainment-focused space aims to create a welcoming environment that can attract a diverse audience, helping to cultivate a new generation of golf enthusiasts.

Rudy reiterated the importance of building out facilities like driving ranges and golf academies to create an accessible entry point for aspiring players. By focusing on the future of golf and harnessing insights from established markets, Golf Saudi aims to create a vibrant golfing culture that fosters both participation and investment, signifying a new era for the sport in the kingdom.

In summary, by utilizing successful models from South Korea and investing in technological partnerships, Golf Saudi aims to cultivate a thriving golfing community. The collaborative efforts with Korean entities are crucial for achieving the ambitious goal of expanding the number of golfers within Saudi Arabia, all while making the sport more accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved.
