EA Expected to Cut Jobs While Promoting AI Amid Pending Saudi Deal

Electronic Arts (EA) has recently made headlines as it navigates significant staffing changes amid its impending $55 billion acquisition led by a Saudi consortium. While the company initially assured employees that there would be no immediate alterations to their roles or day-to-day responsibilities, recent events suggest that a transformation is in motion—raising eyebrows and concerns about future operations.

Recent Layoffs at EA

In a surprising turn of events, EA announced layoffs affecting teams in the United States and India, as reported by Kotaku. The impacted departments include recruitment, customer support, trust and safety, and IT. This latest round of job cuts marks the third occurrence in 2025 alone, with previous layoffs affecting teams involved in popular titles like Skate and Battlefield, the latter of which claimed the title of best-selling game in the US that year. Additionally, EA has previously reduced its workforce by hundreds in well-known studios such as BioWare and Respawn for similar reasons.

The company’s internal communications suggest that these layoffs are part of an initiative to “adapt how we work to better meet fans’ changing needs.” However, as layoffs mount, skepticism looms over EA’s intentions, especially as its financial architecture undergoes a major shift with the upcoming buyout.

The Role of AI in EA’s Strategy

At a recent conference tied to the Summer Game Fest, EA’s president of enterprise development, Laura Miele, praised the potential of AI to streamline game development processes. She expressed optimism about technology’s ability to remove friction from development workflows, which could theoretically accelerate creativity and shorten production timelines. Miele believes that this technological advancement may lead to more efficient prototyping and productivity, allowing developers to focus on their creative output rather than tedious tasks.

Despite her enthusiasm, there’s a sense of contradiction in EA’s approach. On one hand, the integration of AI could enhance productivity; on the other, it raises concerns about job security and the potential displacement of human labor—especially in light of the current layoffs.

Community Response and Political Opposition

In response to the ongoing turmoil, opposition to EA’s buyout has gained momentum. A coalition of 46 members of Congress has publicly denounced the deal, concerned about its implications for American workers. Notably, U.S. Representative Maxwell Frost recently collaborated with prominent gaming influencers, including The Sims YouTuber Kayla “Lilsimsie” Sims, to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with the acquisition. Their initiative has inspired protests in Washington D.C. and other cities, mobilizing the gaming community to voice their concerns.

The Players Alliance, the group organizing these demonstrations, has also collected over 73,000 signatures on a petition urging the U.S. Treasury Secretary to intervene and block the acquisition. Members of the coalition argue that this deal may lead to increased cost-cutting measures that threaten numerous jobs, ultimately benefitting a foreign monarchy at the expense of American workers.

A Cautious Future Ahead

With the looming backdrop of a $20 billion debt burden post-acquisition, EA’s assurance that it will continue “business as usual” feels increasingly precarious. The skepticism surrounding the company’s future can be traced back to the track record of its new Saudi investors and their past behavior in various sectors.

The general sentiment among stakeholders, particularly employees and gamers, is one of wariness about EA’s direction as it grapples with its shifting corporate landscape. As the calls for action grow louder and more organized, it remains to be seen how EA will navigate the challenges ahead and what this will mean for its workforce and brand reputation in an increasingly competitive gaming industry.
