In a recent decision, a federal judge has significantly impacted the families of victims from the 2019 NAS Pensacola shooting. The ruling determined that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is not obligated to provide evidence requested by these families, who are seeking accountability from Saudi Arabia for supposed negligence surrounding the attack.
Legal Setback for Families Seeking Justice
The judge’s ruling is particularly troubling for the families, who assert that crucial evidence held by the DOJ could show that Saudi Arabia had prior knowledge of the shooter’s radicalization before his training in Pensacola. Despite this setback, attorney Chris Paulos, representing the plaintiffs, expressed that there is still ample evidence to support their claims. “It’s certainly a disappointment, yet it was not entirely unforeseen,” he acknowledged, emphasizing that the fight for justice continues even in the face of challenges.
Nearly seven years after the tragic events at NAS Pensacola, the families are growing increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of the investigation. Paulos pointed out that jurors are still waiting for answers regarding the lack of arrests or charges in connection with the attack. Families feel a sense of urgency, given that these unresolved questions continue to compound their grief.
Controversial Closed-Door Hearings
The DOJ has cited national security concerns as the reason why the requested records remain classified, and a private hearing conducted in June allowed the DOJ to justify withholding these documents. Unfortunately, attorneys representing the victims’ families were not permitted to attend, leaving them in the dark about discussions critical to their case. Paulos remarked on the concerning state of transparency, stating, “This incident occurred seven years ago, yet we are no closer to understanding what the government is still investigating.”
The frustration doesn’t stop with the legal proceedings. Ryan Blackwell, a survivor who suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the attack, has voiced his frustrations about the government’s response and the lingering stigma attached to such incidents. Although reluctant to share his thoughts publicly, he emphasizes the need for accountability and recognition. Moreover, he pointed out a larger issue: the lack of engagement from Florida lawmakers. “The victims’ families haven’t had any meaningful interaction with political leaders in a long time, and we would greatly welcome their support in this ongoing struggle,” Paulos stated.
Path Forward for Victims’ Families
While the recent ruling serves as a hurdle, Paulos mentioned that their legal team is considering an appeal. Additionally, they are pursuing other avenues for gathering information that may help bolster their arguments against Saudi Arabia. If the case proceeds to trial, it is expected to be a bench trial, which means a judge will ultimately decide the outcome instead of a jury.
At present, the families stand united in the hope that more information will eventually come to light and that they will receive the justice they deserve. Meanwhile, they await responses from key political figures, including Senator Rick Scott and Congressman Jimmy Patronis.
