Heatherwick Studio has announced an innovative project set to reshape the landscape of astrotourism in Saudi Arabia: the AlUla Manara Observatory. Located in the remote desert area of north-west Saudi Arabia, this striking visitor center and research complex will be a focal point for sky enthusiasts, situated near the historic city of AlUla. The Royal Commission for AlUla selected this design after a competitive international process, designating it as a key component of one of the nation’s first officially recognized Dark Sky Parks.

Design Inspiration and Architectural Concept

The design philosophy of Heatherwick Studio draws inspiration from the geometric patterns seen in galaxies, planetary rings, and other natural formations. By examining these celestial and terrestrial structures, the architectural team has crafted a series of curved, tubular volumes that resemble giant telescopes, each thoughtfully oriented toward the sky.
