Houthis Unleash New Attacks on Saudi Arabia – Global News

Yemen is currently experiencing heightened tensions as the Houthi group has launched a series of attacks targeting critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. These developments coincide with the postponement of an important investment conference, which highlights the escalating security concerns in the region.

Houthi Attacks and Saudi Response

The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Sarea, announced on Monday that six strikes were executed against various Saudi targets in the span of two days. Notably, the operations included attacks on facilities owned by Saudi oil giant Aramco in Yanbu, which Sarea claims resulted in fires. Additional targets included the Shaybah oil field and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, among others. The attacks were characterized as a response to over 200 Saudi airstrikes aimed at Houthi-held areas in Yemen, which took place within the same 48-hour timeframe.

As these assaults wreak havoc, the Saudi kingdom’s security apparatus has been forced to react. Consequently, the Future Investment Initiative conference, originally set to occur from October 26 to 29, has been rescheduled until 2027. This event has traditionally served as a platform for Saudi Arabia to attract foreign investment and showcase its economic ambitions. The postponement signifies a significant setback for the country’s broader economic initiatives.

Impact on Domestic Operations

The aftermath of these targeted strikes has led to substantial disruptions within Saudi Arabia, particularly affecting air travel and workforce operations. Domestic airlines have made last-minute arrangements to facilitate travel for Riyadh’s 7 million residents, advertising flights from Al-Qassim International Airport, located three hours away. Additionally, various government entities have instructed employees to work remotely to ensure their safety, with even prominent offices like the International Monetary Fund’s regional headquarters implementing similar measures.

The cancellations and operational adjustments stem not only from the recent Houthi attacks but also from the ongoing conflict that has persisted since 2014. The civil war has resulted in a complex quagmire, drawing in external powers and complicating peace efforts. A recent missile attack on a Yemeni military base in Shabwa, attributed to the Houthis, resulted in the tragic loss of 73 lives, further fueling tensions and troubling the international community.

International Diplomatic Responses

In light of these ongoing hostilities, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan engaged in discussions with his counterparts from Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, condemning the Houthi assaults. Moreover, Britain announced the expansion of its military support for Saudi Arabia, including increased air patrols by the Royal Air Force. This underscores a growing alliance in the face of rising instability.

Additionally, Turkey is poised to ratify the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, further strengthening regional military cooperation. Meanwhile, Egypt’s parliament is deliberating on potential military support for Saudi Arabia, reflecting a broader regional acknowledgment of the threats posed by the Houthis and the potential for escalating conflict.

Yemen’s situation remains dire as the ongoing civil war deepens. The struggle between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces continues to draw in other nations, heightening regional tensions and complicating the prospect of peace. As both sides escalate their military capacities, the international community remains watchful, hoping for a resolution to a conflict that has already lasted nearly a decade.
